After many requests, and a lot of help from Coronation Street fan Ann-Marie, we've found the dress that Sian Powers wore to the prom the other week.
The black and white maxi dress worn by Sian comes from Lipsy and it's here.

How long have proms been common in Britain?
ReplyDeleteYou seem to be more American every day.
We don't even have proms! We have graduation balls... same thing, just less fancy!
ReplyDeleteIt was probably just me but I thought the dress that Sian was wearing awful and incredibly un-fashionable.
ReplyDeletei find it pretty ugly as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree with John M. the dress looked un-fashionable or rather more fitting the older set rather than for younger ladies off to a prom...
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid Anonymous is out of touch. At the school where I taught we've had Year 11 Proms for at least 15 years. You need only to look in the local press around June/July to see how ubiquitous they are.
ReplyDeleteI thought the dress to be typical of the prom dresses being worn this year.
ReplyDeleteHas all the features; summery weight fabric, full length, plunging neckline, and b&w has been very fashionable for proms for a while now.
Sian did look cold though, huddled with arms crossed inside her little sweater, but then Corrie is filmed about 6-8 wks in advance.
Oddly enough, where I grew up in Western Canada... we didn't call it prom... we called it "grad". Maxi-dresses are very in right now...
ReplyDeleteRebecca in TO..
Rebecca, I grew up in Southern Ontario, and we always called it 'Grad' night too :)
ReplyDeleteA "Prom" was what the Americans had and still do have.
You have a prom at the end of year 11 in high school and also some primary schools have started doing them at the end of year 6
