Coronation Street: Dump him, love, and buy a new handbag

Reproduced with permission from the fab TV blog PauseLiveAction

Have you noticed Fiz Stape’s handbag on Coronation Street recently? It’s a kind of shapeless drawstring faux-leather sack in a colour that recalls dried dog poo. It’s a characterless handbag, a sad handbag, a handbag that says: “You know what? I’ve lost the will to accessorise.”

And this is the woman whose arm candy was previously legendary. She’s had bags in the shape of little dogs, little cars, watering cans. She’s had big fluffy bags, knitted purple tartan bags. And an eccentric-but-wonderful wardrobe to go with them. She’s been a flame-haired funky fashion icon.

And now she’s gone all dowdy.

Ok, I know she’s married now and has the responsibility of Chesney and whatnot, so she may have decided that her style needs to mature a little bit. But what her current dull outfits and that monstrosity of a bag are saying to me is that she’s losing her Fizness – overwhelmed by the stress and tedium of life with her lying, cheating, whingeing useless lump of a husband, Fiz’s sartorial rainbow has disappeared.

This cannot be allowed to happen. I propose sending in an emergency team of Jeremy Kyle (to help her get rid of Stape), Gok Wan (for style), Noel Fielding (for eccentricity) and me (for bag advice – half an hour in TK Maxx and I’d sort her out).

  2. Great blog Nora - love the 'lost the will to accesorise', sums it all up to a 'T'! Current Fizz is but a pale pastiche of her earlier incarnation - perhaps she's been abducted by aliens from Planet Stapewick and this is a doppelganger in the meantime?

  3. YES YES YES! I've been moaning for months how they've totally ruined our sparky Fiz! Putting her together with Stape didn't make her mature and responsible, it dragged her down.

  5. I would like a t-shirt like that; the only souvenir I have is a book "25 Years of Coronation Street" that has a personal note and signature from Jean Alexander in it.

Fiz was a wonderful character; why have they changed her so much?
I believe she's the only character I can think of that has changed gradually, and not for any reason other than her marriage to John.
As she has receded into the background, Chesney has come forward to present as a mature young man, with definite ideas of what's right and wrong, and no problem speaking up.

  6. Gadge; you can order official corrie t-shirts from the official corrie site. I did see a Rovers tshirt on ebay the other day but it was a very old one.

  7. Check the cbc shop as well, http://www.cbcshop.ca/CBC/shopping/boutique.aspx?CatalogName=CBCBase&CategoryName=boutique_coronation_subroot&lang=en-CA

They'll probably ship outside the country. Keep in mind, ladies' sizes run on the small side.

  8. Fiz, come back. All is forgiven.

Right now in Canada Fiz is busy flushing her life down the toilet, just having married Mr. Stupid. To think the spunky, feisty Fiona Brown has been reduced to this. So sad.
I think we need to buy her this book:
