Never a Cross Word

When watching Coronation Street last night we spotted Ken trying to complete his crossword. Now I'm a bit of a crossword buff and so my interest was piqued. Rewinding and pausing the action I was a little surprised by what I saw. First of all, Ken was attempting the Telegraph Toughie, a crossword which is supposed to be slightly trickier than their relatively simple cryptic, and there I was thinking he was a Guardian reader.

Now let's look at what he's got in the grid. 1 down is *O*J and I can't think of a word that would fit in there and again at 6 across (TOLORE****) and 13 across (TON*TUMP), what're they supposed to be? Over in the top right hand corner he's put in AISA, which is not in any dictionary that I've got. Finally there is 16 across, EERY, it's an alternative spelling of EERIE but not much used and unlikely to be appearing in a straightforward crosword like that.
So I can only come to one conclusion and that's that Ken's made a right old mess of it and is no cruciverbalist.

  1. No English word can end in J, it's the law

Oh, wait. American and English aren't quite the same language, are they?
