Corrie win three gongs at British Soap Awards 2010

Coronation Street won only three awards at last night's British Soap Awards, compared to 10 awards for EastEnders. The three awards for Corrie are as follows:

Betty Driver who plays barmaid Betty Williams, won the lifetime achievement award. Betty, who could not pick up her award in person because of illness, said in a recorded message she was "so excited I don't know what to say". She went on to say: "I'm not very good at this but if I keep on I'll weep I'm not very good at making speeches but I want to say thank you to everyone, especially ITV, the soap awards and the lovely Granada where I've worked for over 40 years."

The second award went to Michelle Keegan, who plays Tina McIntyre for sexiest female. And best comedy performance went to Craig Gazey, who plays Graeme Proctor.

Tribute was also paid to Maggie Jones - Weatherfield's Blanche Hunt - who died in December, aged 75. A montage of her most memorable moments was shown before the audience gave a standing ovation.

The awards will be shown on ITV1 on Wednesday, 19 May. The full list of winners is online at the BBC.

You can still vote for Corrie in the TV Now Awards and The Oggies Awards

  1. I thought Eileen Derbyshire would've had the Lifetime Achievement Award. Emily's had more dramatic storylines than Betty's had and has been in it longer. Maybe because Betty's 90 that she was given it. But I'm pleased. No mention of Corrie's 50th anniversary?

  2. I think its because Betty is leaving. Sorry to see her go, but she is hardly in it these days. A character that everyone likes and about the only female one that is not an unpleasant shrieking harpie or a looney.

  3. I can't understand why Corrie never do well at these awards dos.

  4. Neither can I Nora. I'm glad Doctors is getting noticed, but personally, I think Eastenders is rubbish, yet they always dominate to an unbelievable extent. I got sick fed up seeing babs Windsor accepting the best soap award year after year.

  5. Perhaps Eileen Derbyshire has already been offered it but refused? She doesnt like the limelight does she?

Eastenders always does better at these things than corrie, often irrespective of the quality they are turning out, and what the ratings suggest. Is it possibly down to EE attracting a younger audience that is more likely to vote in these things?

  6. Grr Eastenders are the ENEMY!
All three Corrie awards thoroughly deserved. Looking forward to another brilliant acceptance speech by Craig Gazey.

  7. Well deserved award for the wonderful Betty. Her contribution to the street has always been underestimated. In my mind she steals any scene she appears in- her recent advice to menapausal Liz was a classic example. Perhaps they will kill her off and that will be an opportunity for old favourites to pop back for the anniversary. Who wouldn't come back for Bettys funeral. They may even persuade Maggie Clegg to pop back!

  8. Eastenders is far better than Corrie, Corrie should have retired years ago, it has no appeal whatsoever. Eastenders's storylines aren't always good, and are sometimes dull and boring, but nevertheless, it still wins more awards than Corrie, so the writers must be getting something right...Eastenders Rules!!!!
