Sue Cleaver signs new Corrie contract

There's some great news for fans of Eileen Grimshaw. Actress Sue Cleaver has signed a new contract to stay another 18 months on Coronation Street.

The Mirror says that Sue feared she might be for the chop after her drink and driving ban earlier this month.

Now then, can Eileen have a proper storyline, please Corrie?

  1. Nooooooooooooo! Why would that happen? She is devoid of humour, talent, presence, storylines, credibility and more. I love phil collinson but I cannot belies he's spared this non character the axe. She was awful in dinnerladies and always seems like she's just reading from the script in a monotonous tone. I'm upset, clearly. The crunch came for me when she was seeing jessie and it was just so flat. Every time she kissed him it made me wince and vice versa and it's because she isn't believable in the part at all.

  2. If there is one character I could see growing old in the Street, it's Eileen. She's not my favourite character by any means, but she is the heart and soul of the programme. The big-hearted slapper with a heart of gold. No-one could quite equal the legendary Elsie Tanner, but Sue Cleaver does a pretty good job. Long may she continue.

  3. Are you confusing eileen with liz, john? Slapper?! Heart and soul of the street?! Why? Who does she affect? Jason? Yes, but that's it. Comparing cleaver to Phoenix is actually insulting to pat's memory; she was legendary and embodied everything a corrie woman should be about. We obviously watch two different programmes.

  4. I think its good news if they give her something interesting to do, and perhaps find her a man that can be her equal

  5. I love Eileen too. Yes, she's grumpy and cynical and she loves her kids and her lodgers. We haven't seen enough of her and Steve in the cab office these days, they had a wonderful friendship that seems to have been laid aside recently.

  6. A great storyline for the 50th anniversary would be Eileen finding out that she's related to the Tanners. Elsie's maiden name was Grimshaw and they live in the same house. Coincidence? It'd be an excuse to bring Dennis and Linda back. Sadly, not Elsie though. Can anyone send this suggestion to Corrie's Powers That Be? lol

Personally, I like Eileen. But I agree she has become flat, now with nemesis Gail in jail. Why give her romance? Sue played a blinder during the Colin saga. Maybe she should get linked by other Corrie women: Deirdre, Liz, Anna and she's got links to Rita anyway. Thanks

  7. Very sad news - I was hoping they'd axe her, can't stand Eileen.

Rubbish character played by a rubbish actress.

  8. I used to love Eileen, but she does seem a lot more miserable, bitter and cynical these days. I'm happy that her contract has been renewed...as long as she gets some good storylines which provide her with some happiness.

  9. I for one love Eileen. I think she is a great and under-used character. Her and Steve make a good comedy pairing.

    Glad she is staying!

  10. I'm over the moon that Eileen's staying. She's been given really crap blokes to work with (no offence to the actors) but Jesse was a no-hoper and not at all funny and the fella before him was stupid too. She needs a really good meaty, funny storyline. Maybe a partnership with Fat Brenda where they go to Blackpool for a few days to cop off with some men and end up drunk on the beach wearing Kiss Me Quick hats and singing Una Paloma Blanca while eating candy floss.

  11. I agree, I think Eileen's great in the cab office/with Steve and all she needs is a few good lines and the odd decent storyline.

  12. Excellent! Now hopefully they can give her some new storylines!

  13. I like Eileen at her hating-Gail best. *That* fight on the cobbles is one of my all time fave Corrie moments. She's been improperly used of late.

  14. When the character was introduced, she was funny and quick with a quip, and could run mental rings round Steve.
Now they have made her flat and dull.
Who's hogging all the lines? Give some to Eileen and restore her humour, and remove her victim status - Sue Cleaver can play comedy really well.

  15. I am sorry to hear this, I think Eileen should have been axed I had high hopes for this new producer but he seems a bit random.

  16. I just hope the new producer realises that he some some amazing characters which seem to be under used at the moment, but everytime they are seen the viewing public sing praise.

Aunty Pam is a perfect example and I hope Kate Anthony has been given some great storylines as she is a quality actress who has turned a character into a Corrie favourite.

  18. I hope this gives the producers chance to turn her character around, she has become very unlikable over the last year
