Grumpy Fairy: Mon Jan 4, 2010 Corrie Episode Review

Written by Damon Rochefort (7:30) and David Lane (8:30), directed by Durno Johnston.

Bethany has come down with the chicken pox, so she and Sarah won't be able to make Gail's wedding. Quelle surprise. Gail thinks they're on the right track money-wise, but Joe's avidly avoiding his debt-collector. Joe's loan-shark wants his money today, or he'll threaten to have a word with Tina, Joe's daughter. More bad news: the sale of the house fell through. Gail is determined to not let this spoil the wedding, but the wedding is the last thing on Joe's mind at the moment. The loan-shark sets after Tina and feigns interest in buying her flat to get her alone. Joe finds out and busts in on them. He manages to rid of the loan-shark but not for long. The loan-shark finds him later and takes his seventy quid and tells Joe that he'll be coming to collect the rest on his wedding day. Oh no.

Meanwhile, Gail is still very curious about who Audrey's "mystery man" is. Audrey does remember offering to send Gail on honeymoon. Although, it'll be a cottage in the Lake District, in January. Hardly a "wish you were here."

Sally is making the best of her situation. Everyone at the factory is suspicious of why Sally has yet another day off. Even Gail was inquiring about Sally. They still have not told the girls about Sally's breast cancer diagnosis. How long are they going to wait before people start wondering?

The air is still chilly at Chez McDonald. Becky is still pouting over feeling like a baby factory and Steve is still, well, pouting. Becky is concerned about how having a baby will interfere with her smoking and drinking hobbies. Becky has decided that she does not want kids - end of. Liz isn't happy that their rowing is upsetting their current child, Amy. Becky goes out with Claire to the pictures for the evening, and Steve takes the opportunity to get bladdered on Ashley's couch and complain about the female species. Becky was summoned home early to care for Amy since Steve has been MIA. Steve comes home drunk with Becky waiting for him. She makes it clear how unhappy she is with him over all this baby-banter and tells him he's not to join her in bed - he's to fester elsewhere.

Molly is set on convincing Tyrone to take a job elsewhere. She's clearly trying to rid herself of a certain Kevin Webster. Ironically, Tyrone feels as though he's cheating on Kev by even calling the other garage for an appointment.

Dev is extremely happy about the fact that he has his kids after school and they're set to drive him crazy jumping all over his furniture and body. He's enjoying every minute of it. Sunita looks happy to see her kids enjoying their father's company, but threatens Dev that he better not get hot/cold on her children. Will he?

Ken is busy petitioning the halt of Peter's bar. I can see he's made no New Year's resolutions. He manages to get a few signatures I'm sure. Peter attempts to extend an olive branch to Ken (letting Simon take tea at No. 1) despite his obvious feelings towards this petitioning activity. Is he trying to kill Ken with kindness? Granddad George offers to pay for Simon to go to a private school, but Peter refuses stating that Simon is happy at Bessie Street Primary. Is this Granddad George's next attempt at asserting control over little Simon Barlow?

HIGHLIGHTS:
- Liz explaining to Amy what the "grumpy fairy" is. "He's like the tooth fairy, only instead of leaving you 2p, he leaves you a miserable bugger instead." I get visited by the Grumpy Fairy every Sunday night, like clockwork.
- Gail giving Audrey a hard time about her drunkenness the night before. Audrey says she only had a couple, to which Gail responded, "bottles?!" I love the camaraderie between these two.
- Kelly complaining that Sean took her to a gay club for New Year's Eve, and half of the men thought she was a drag queen and the other half thought she was a Diana Ross tribute act booked for the night. Haha, she is quite tranny-esque.
- Becky worried that if she ever got pregnant that she'd not be able to smoke and complaining that as it is she works so much she barely has time to smoke anymore.
- Dev having a good time with his kids.
- Steve's drunken appearance later on that night. Especially his impression of Claire! Bahaha.

LOWLIGHTS:
- Molly trying to thwart Tyrone's partnership at the garage and his relationship with Kev to suit her own selfish needs.
- Dev's unflatteringly clingy/low-cut tan jumper.
- Ken still peddling his petition despite Peter's pleas.
- Tina letting some strange man (loan-shark) into her flat alone. I wouldn't do that!

Looking forward to: Gail and Joe's wedding!
Not looking forward to: Watching Joe sweat over his debts, again.

  1. Maybe I'm the only one but I feel really sorry for Joe. He is essentially a good guy who has got into a mess that isn't really his fault, and he is desperate not to let his family down.

The Steve/Becky stuff is cringy and lacks depth IMO. Yes, we know he wants babies and she doesn't. We don't need numerous scenes going round in circles on these facts. I wish they would give other characters screentime, or move on to the point with this storyline!

  2. I agree re. Steve/Becky storyline. Steve in particular seems to be acting a wee bit out of character. However, I read in What's On TV mag that there is due to be some revelation over next couple of weeks re. exactly why Becky feels so strongly re. not having kids. IMHO it's her choice, but apparently there is some specific aspect of her past which has made her feel the way she does...goodness only knows what it will be...

  3. on Becky & Steve, I can see what's going to happen.

They'll fight some more then Steve will eventually come around and tell Becky that he loves her and that he'll be happy not having any other kids. Then Becky will tell him that she's pregnant. Then she'll probably have a miscarriage.

  4. You know, I DO feel sorry for Joe, but I still find his anxiety very annoying. It gets me uptight just watching him. Maybe that's a testament to Reece Dinsdale's acting skills.

And, yes, the Steve-Becky storyline has become predictable, and I agree it drained on too long. But heck, it's better than a "becky in trouble with the law" storyline.
