Corrie: A Costume Drama

Wednesday’s double Coronation Street brought us yet more offerings from the dressing-up box that time forgot. Poor Chesney, given the reins as manager of Dev’s new chippy “For Your Fries Only” was forced to wear a haddock costume to help promote the business. Which he ended up getting stuck in. Dev was very excited. It was kind of funny but made me wonder how many fancy dress scenes in Corrie is too many?

Oh my cod
Not long ago Chesney and Sinead were planning to get married. Beth had arranged a get-together in the Bistro to celebrate and watch a DVD of Sinead’s childhood. It all went wrong. And again they were in fancy dress. Beth as some kind of 1920’s madam and Ches as a toy soldier. Hilarious.

Armed and ridiculous
Charming but simple-minded Kirk discovered his political ambitions back in September. Or rather he was coerced into standing for Mayor, going up against ultra-ambitious Sally Webster. But he didn’t campaign the conventional way. He ran as ‘Buzzer the Bee’ – Weatherfield County’s football mascot. My sides are splitting here.

Kirk wants to “Bee” Mayor

Henry Newton, heir to the famous brewery, was recently exposed in his cruel prank on Gemma, revealing he was only ‘dating’ her for a bet. Gemma was heartbroken. She’d not long ago organized a FANCY DRESS party for his birthday. He went as a sailor and she went as frog spawn (I think). Anyway how novel.

You be my seaman I'll be your spawn
Roy Cropper showed his grumpy side over Christmas, channeling a mash-up of Ebenezer Scrooge and Santa Claus. He claimed to be impersonating Pelznickel, a sort of German Father Christmas that comes out of the woods in a bad mood and scares children. He offered fruit and veg as Christmas presents to Weatherfields kids. They obviously loved it.

The bag is non-negotiable
In a separate Christmas episode, more dressing up took place. Eva and Adam got steamy at the community centre between scenes of Billy’s Christmas play. No wonder he turned to drugs.

Once upon a time...

Merry Kiss-mas
I don’t really understand why Corrie keeps turning to fancy dress. It rarely adds much to a storyline. I know the show has a long tradition of getting out the silly costumes (see below). But perhaps they should lock up the costume box for a bit and focus on some nice juicy summer storylines for us.

If you're going to do it, do it proper'!

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 4th of April 2018 7.30pm

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of the Coronation Street Blog and the first of tonights two episodes.

Clueless about Phelan's messiah-like recovery, an unsuspecting Eileen is still incarcerated in Weatherfield cop shop and facing further questioning.
Upon confirmation of Andy's dead body at the mill, Eileen realises that Andy was last seen alive on the day of her wedding.

The police now need to search Andys old flat, but with Craig facing self-imprisonment due to his burgeoning OCD, will this stop the police from entering?

Also facing a self-enforced prison (albeit metaphorical) is David Platt. His anguish following the sexual assault is now becoming hard to contain. Waking on the sofa, he continues to blow hot and cold with Shona, yet also subtly confides in Maria about a possible HIV test. Masquerading as Gary Windass, David visits the sexual health clinic but as he almost wittingly confesses the 'unprotected sex' to the nurse, he panics and flees.

Returning home, he finds Shona packing her bags. David again ferociously embraces her, before discarding her post-coital. He unconvincingly declares that he doesn't love her anymore and that they are through.

In the juxtaposition of Corrie's usual tradition, the more serious of tonights drama (Murder, OCD, SEX) sat nicely alongside Dev's new chip shop adventures, Rosie and Sophie's 'selfie gate',  plus Chezney dressed as a haddock (he's always been a wet fish - just ask Sinead). And over at the Rovers, Angie relishes her new accountancy role but Jude seems a bit fishy in his new marine biologist job?.As always, Mary's wonderful enthusiasm keeps this story ticking along nicely. But, Just WHATT is Jude thinking not letting Mary meet his new employers?.

Anyway, that's me done for another week. Keep an eye out for tonights 8.30pm episode review written by @glenn_writes.

Corrie Chippy gets new owner - we take a look back

Next week on Coronation Street, we'll see a new owner take over the chippy on Rosamund Street.  Want to know who it'll be? You can find out here!

It's time then to take a look back at the history, brief though it is, of the chippy in our favourite soap.

The chippy is currently called For Your Fries Only but it wasn't always called that. Formerly it was called Wong's Chip Shop.

The chip shop was introduced back in 2008 when Cilla Battersby-Brown and her friend Yana Lumb worked there. Since their departures, the chip shop hasn't really featured in any storylines, only a passing reference.   Probably the best known storyline featuring Wong's chippy was when Les and Yana sat outside of it in a tub of peas on Christmas Eve 2006.

I wonder what the new owner will bring to the chippy and if it's all part of the regeneration of Rosamund Street?
