Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 19th May

craig tinker, coronation street

It's a big day for Craig as it's his first day on his CID placement, shadowing Kit whilst wearing a natty beige suit. It's also his last day on the force, sorry Craig fans (there must be at least 3 amongst the 4 million regular viewers).

Coronation Street Soap Scoop! Craig's life hangs in the balance

Kit's got something else on his mind as he realises that the date of Brodie's birth is nine months after he and Lou did the deed. A little bit of history repeating? He drops hints about the alleged paternity to Mick after the latter has a go at him re: Kit stopping Brodie shoplifting from Dev's. Mick is so angry that he pushes over a barbecue in Mawdsley street. No garden furniture is safe with him around.

Craig rushes to the scene after Fiz reports a disturbance, whereby Lou gets rid of him, but as he hears shouting and banging, which appears to be Mick attacking Lou (who emerges with her head bleeding), Craig starts to chase Mick down the street. I thought the Michaelises were quite good characters, the new nuisance neighbours, when they were introduced, but now it seems to be turning into an Eastenders storyline. The bad guys always soften (Battersbys, Windasses) but these two are just a bit much. Mick, drunk, drives off with a baseball bat, followed by a Tinker. He tries to arrest him for drink driving, but Mick assumes Craig has been instructed by Kit to follow him and set him up, and when he steps out of the vehicle van, he attacks Craigy. Bring back Beth, she'd sort him out.

  1. So Brody, 5 minutes out of Young Offenders, goes shoplifting? !

  2. I really hope Brody is not going to be around after Mick and Lou have gone.

  3. Jeanie (anon): horrible epiode, just horrible. It was disrespectful, mean-spirited, nasty, cheap, disgusting. Now I know it's popular to take cheap shots at Craig and I don't disagree that he is not the greatest of actors. But he has been part of the Street since he and his rat unnerved Steve MacDonald, and he is a decent person. He was great as Tim's window cleaning sidekick, and he was a loyal and caring friend to Faye. So to turn his death into an effing joke: just inexcusable and so wrong on so many levels. The casual, pointless brutality; the disgusting glorification of the moment with the ramped up music; the inexplicable focus on the tragedy of Mick, a character who has been on the street for only a few seconds, rather than Craig who grew up on the show; the lazy story telling that led to Mick's rage (I mean if he was inside how could he not suspect before that Brody wasn't his son); and most unforgiveable of all, the presentation of Craig's murder as some how hilariously FUNNY, not the tragic loss of life of a young man. Even if you don't care about Craig, what about Beth?! He was her pride and joy, and to destroy her, along with him...WHY? Really inexplicable this episode and hard to understand what the writers were trying to achieve. When people have complained about how bad Corrie was getting, I'd roll my eyes. But they are right. It really has struck rock bottom. There are so many bad story lines now and worse, the writers are so disrespectful to their own characters, to the history of the show, and to the overall tone and ethos of Coronation Street that it is not worth watching, at least not to me.

  4. Apparently, the actor who played Craig wanted him to be killed off. There's an interview in the daily mirror today with him. I don't think anyone thought that the murder was funny, did they? Characters such as Maria, Gary and Kirk were shocked and saddened by it.
