Good evening. Tonight we are slightly in la la land as we have the historic story of the relationship between DC Zodiac / Kit Green and Mark / Mick Michaelis. As told by the team the history scenes were intertwined with current days scenes but conveying time travel is best left to the Dr Whos of this (and other) world(s). So it is my intention to lay out the historic events in sequence if I can.
Events were triggered by Bernie visiting Kit Green's mother asking for the opportunity to meet her son - this was refused although Bernie was departing as Kit was returning home so he caught sight of her and a green elephant she was wearing around her neck. I am not sure if this was mentioned before but suspect it has been. It is then established that Kit and Mick are firm friends and because Mick's parents are a waste of space it is understood that Mick spent a lot of time staying with Kit and his parents no doubt with the intention of hoping he might develop into a better person.
Kit was unsettled by spotting his "mother" as his family has given him very good family links and so her sudden appearance has raised all the old questions as to why she did not bring him up. Hanging around with Mick they get up to the usual behaviour of youths stealing some cider from the local corner shop. Kit later trying to make amends to the shop keeper goes into pay - but as that would constitute accepting payment from a person under age the shop keeper refuses. Mick has also gone with Kit and the shop keeper knows of Mick's background and his family, particularly his stinking mother, and hands out a massive tongue lashing to Mick on the basis that his family are the local ne'er do wells and Kit needs more sense than to hang around with such a loser.
Kit and Mick retire to lick their mental wounds and Kit decides that the shop keeper must pay for his outspokenness and that he will suffer. Kit and Mick watch the shop until it is locked up and the owner departs. They then light three fireworks dropping them through the letter box and we hear multiple bangs going off, followed by a woman screaming. The boys were unaware that the shop owner had a wife on the premises - they believed it was empty. The shop keeper returns and sees the two boys and immediately calls the police. Kit has longer legs (he was tall even then) and can run a lot faster than Mick who gets caught by the police after a brief chase and is hauled away to the station.
We also see that Mick has pulled Lou Denham and that they were getting on well together and that Kit was somewhat jealous. We are also made aware that Mick was planning to join the army once they leave school.
It transpires that the wife had suffered third degree burns as a result of Kit's actions and of course the police throw the book at Mick given his familial background so he serves time in the then equivalent of young offenders where after six months Kit and Lou eventually visit him. Kit accepts that Mick has been honourable and is serving the time which rightfully Kit should be serving - it was his idea and he delivered the fireworks into the shop. Mick asks Kit to deliver drugs into the prison to repay his debt but Kit refuses and does not visit Mick again.
Kit changes school to get him away from bad influences and does well and joins the police service and this largely explains his current day to hold Mick after the fight with Gary as Mick could easily still reveal the events of some 17 years ago when they were all at school together Lou usefully reveals at one point.
In the present Bernie has seen the picture of the two boys together and keep pursuing Kit to find out what the history is. Alongside this Sarah admits that sometimes she has difficulty trusting her partners - and goes through a list of some of the let downs she has experienced. So she is not sure she entirely trusts Kit either. Bernie gets a part of the story out of Mick and continues to pursue Kit for the full story - which he eventually gives her. She agrees to say nothing to anyone else.
Gary and Maria keep crossing tracks with Kit and Sarah and Gary wants to know why Mick's complaint is being pursued when he started it. The DS Swain catches Kit and Mick having a fight and wants to know the reason why from Kit - but he is giving nothing away.
Kit and Tinks cross paths as well. Kit gives Craig some friendly advice - he needs to be sure that his professional work and his friends do not get intertwined - it makes the job much more difficult - and he is not even sure why Craig wants to have another crack at CID. Kit later finds out from DS Swain that Craig will be shadowing him for the next two weeks.
Mick goes after another job but Gary has been on the jungle telephone to all the local employers and warned them off of employing Mick so he returns from an interview and still has no work - so things are going from bad to worse.
We are constantly reminded that Brodie is being released from young offenders today and eventually he makes it to the Street and his parents take him to Speed Dahl to celebrate his freedom and hopefully a return to a proper life.
Just before this however we see another flashback where it is time for young Mick's release from prison and we focus on the discussion between young Kit and young Lou. In Mick's absence it would appear that they have got quite close to each other and both agree that they will not tell Mick of this. Lou observes that it will be up to her to deal with a "problem" and no doubt she did.
Given the complexities and ground covered this evening on more or less a single story I have slightly truncated it as an essay does not help. If anyone can explain the importance of the green elephant which we see Bernie throw in a rubbish bin please add the details below - it is obviously important but I cannot place it.
I feel the young Kit should have been taller than he was in relation to Mick and Lou - apart from that I have to hope that normality returns next week.

Young Kit asked his mum about Bernie's jade elephant because he has one too. Presumably a gift from Bernie when she gave "Zodiac" up for adoption. Though it is questionable whether Kit could see it from that distance.
ReplyDeleteIn relation to the green elephant, I believe that when Bernie first met Kit at his house she was looking for her son Christopher (Zodiac). She pretended to be a cleaner and when left alone she rooted through his drawers and found the green elephant. She then knew he was her son (only now do we know why)
ReplyDeleteI remember, when Bernie first tracked Kit down, she found the elephant charm she'd given him in his flat / house. I think they each had one.
ReplyDeleteI remember when Bernie tracked Kit down, she spoke of an elephant charm. She had one and she'd given one to baby Kit. She saw it in his house and that confirmed to her that he was her son.
ReplyDeleteGreat review, as always! The green elephant is what gave it away to Bernie when she first spoke with Kit about him being her son. He denied it, but when she saw the green elephant he retrieved from the bin, she knew for certain that they were mother and son. Hope this helps! Have a very Blessed and Magical day! X
ReplyDeleteI didn't remember him getting it out of the bin, I thought that she had left one with him when he was born. She had one in her little trinket box while at Gemma's house.
DeleteDidn't Bernie leave the baby/child with an elephant similar to the one she wore around her neck? She throws it in the trash at one point when she goes to score some drugs (in the flashback) but didn't she have one in her little boxof trinkets? In Victorian england...many children were left as foundling with often a charm or a little marker..when they went to recover their child their marker matched the one they left behind. Could it, the elephant have been one such marker. Might be a stretch, but who knows....the whole story is cloudy
ReplyDeleteMany thanks everyone. Now you tell me I remember the green elephant - sorry it seemed a mystery to me.
ReplyDeleteAlso thank you for all the positive comments - it makes doing these reviews worthwhile.
you're very welcome. Always a pleasure to read your reviews, and then read others take on things. Cheers!
