Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 30th September

LISA - KIT - CORONATION STREET - ITV

Deedee plays Joel's message to Swain, who thinks it means he wanted to off himself, although Deedee thinks it's all a hoax by her ex. Maybe he read about Phelan and his faked death and was inspired. Swain says good riddance to bad rubbish leavingo D.S. Deedee to do the detecting - she goes to the place of Joel's last location and finds another vehicke near the decoy car, which is later revealed to have been sold to someone meeting Joel's description. Meanwhile, Swain and Kit find a notebook in Joel's flat that proves he wrote his suicide note at home and his death was either planned or faked.

STU - CORONATION STREET - ITV

Fortunately Mason chooses to sleep in Speed Daal rather than going to Stu's ex-place, Tent City. Yasmeen is very unkeen on having Mason stay at no. 6, but she capitulates and they smuggle him in under the cover of everyone being busy with other things.

Sarah hands over her voicemail number and PIN to her ex so he can access her messages that she can't get in Turkey. What could go wrong? Adam finds a voicemail from Damon, who somehow has heard about Bethany and who also says there's some money in a lock-up, with deets on how to access it. We don't see if Adam actions this but he does donate £500 to the Bethany stoma fund.

God, I'll be glad when this funeral is over. Now Billy and Bernie are arguing about flowers, FFS. Paul's final weeks and death were moving and now it's just becoming a farce. As an aside, it's funny that Bernie, who is pretty self-centred, has been the one to tame Dev; he is always the supportive one re: the Winter shenanigans, whereas every other girlfriend has been at the whim of Dev's ego. He agrees to fund sending (half of) Paul's ashes into space, at Bernie's request. Weird flex but ok.

Fiz is supposed to have a romantic meal with Ty to make up for the spoiled birthday but she has a funny turn at work and Dr Gaddas is immediately available to diagnose....low blood pressure? Early menopause? No, it's pregnancy, which is kind of funny given that Fiz's real life pregnancies have been covered by i) going to look after Cilla ii) taking Hope to some kind of special school for devil children and iii) Norwich. I can see why Fiz might not want to have another kid, given the way her firstborn turned out. Maybe it'll be a boy this time.

Preview of tonight's Coronation Street - Monday 30 September 2024

Monday 30th September 2024

Having received a voice message from Joel, Dee-Dee plays it to Lisa who reckons it could be a suicide note. Through Joel’s phone signal, Kit pinpoints his last whereabouts and finds his car parked on a bridge with a folded note on the dashboard. Lisa breaks the news that they are now looking for Joel’s body. Has Joel really taken his own life?

Following Fiz’s ruined birthday celebrations, Tyrone is planning a romantic dinner to make up for it. After experiencing dizziness at work a worried Fiz books in for a doctor's appointment.

With no agreements so far on Paul’s funeral, Billy suggests to Bernie they choose the flowers together, resulting in another argument. Bernie tells Dev that she might not be able to give Paul the funeral she would have liked, but she’ll find a fitting place to bury his ashes. What does Bernie have planned?

Stu is taken aback to find Mason already at work who explains he spent the night in the restaurant to avoid another beating from his brothers. Having been in a similar situation, will Stu be able to help Mason?

Unable to access her voicemail from Turkey and waiting for news from a loan company, Sarah asks Adam to check them. As Adam listens, he’s shocked to come across one from Damon.

John Thomson interview: Jesse Chadwick returns for Gail's leaving storyline

Were you happy to get the call to return to Coronation Street?

I was really happy to get the call, it was always a case of never say never but it came in between jobs for me so the timing was perfect. I have a young daughter so I don’t like to travel too far from home and although the last time I was in the show was 15 years ago it has felt like meeting up with an old friend you haven’t seen for a long time and the years just melt away.

What is it that you like about the character of Jesse?

What I like is the way he’s changed. The old adage says, never work with children and animals, well Jesse was a children's entertainer that had a talking parrot! He was also a spark so I always thought that might be the end of him, disposed of in an electrical accident, but that never manifested and it was actually his romantic misdemeanours that led to his exit. So it’s quite a relief not to have to deal with children and animals this time.

How much has he changed over the years?

He always had a bit of a cowboy, country and western type look, his name is Jesse James Chadwick. But he’s smartened himself up a bit now, his look has changed and I’ve got rid of those boots that really hurt me so that’s a relief! He’s still got a great sense of humour though and there’s some nice comedy to be played. It's a joy to be given stuff that's sometimes dramatic and sometimes humorous, it's really nice to get to play both sides.

Do we have any idea what Jesse has been up to over the last 15 years?

Well he did remarry but that didn’t work out. He was also badly let down by a friend which culminated in him being left in some dire circumstances. So as a means to reinvent himself he started to travel the world to, as they say, find himself.

Last time he was in Weatherfield he was in a relationship with Eileen, who spots him as soon as he climbs out of the taxi. Is he prepared to see Eileen and is he back with any interest in rekindling their relationship?

No he’s not really prepared to see Eileen after things ended so badly between them. When Jesse left he’d been spreading his bets over two sisters, which is slightly morally bankrupt to say the least. He’s changed dramatically because he’s very remorseful for that behaviour, so for him to think that Eileen would even contemplate having him back after he made a play for her sister is not on his radar. I don't think the new Jesse could possibly entertain that there would ever be anything with Eileen again because of his actions in the past.

So if he's not back for Eileen, why is he back?

He met Gail in Thailand, he's heard about Bethany and he’s very worried. So on his travels he’s returned via Weatherfield to check on Gail, because they've stayed in touch via email. He’s heard all about Bethany and he’s very concerned for Gail.

The Platts are totally baffled by Jesse's arrival, how do they react to him suddenly appearing and showing concern?

So two like him and two hate him! Shona and Nick are prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt, whereas David and Sarah are absolutely not, it’s just total mistrust from the start. There is the thinking that they need a decent man in their lives but as soon as David lists all Gail’s previous it's no wonder that there is a mistrust because Gail’s sense of judgement over men has been very poor. Really Shona and Nick are very generous in their offer to wipe the slight clean and see what Jesse might be like given Gail's history. Jesse’s going to have to work really hard to get David and Sarah on his side and see he is just a friend who cares about Gail because there's a real sense of mistrust about his motives.

How are you finding working with the Platt family?

I was a bit shell shocked when I first came in because I’d forgotten the speed of the turnaround so it was an absolute baptism of fire. But everyone in the Platts has made me feel so welcome. I just feel secure and proper looked after. Helen and I are absolutely thrilled to be working together, everyone’s good company and there’s always fun to be had on set with the Platts which is great. It was a bit like crank handle starting a car after all these years but the laughs have got us through. Ben said to me ‘you do know we’re all always word perfect don’t you’ and I thought oh no but thank god he was winding me up. My ability to learn lines at speed is getting better and better again so it’s not as daunting as it was. And I’m sharing a dressing room with Joe (Duttine) which is great, he’s a really good guy, we get on really well and we’re both the same juggling childcare and getting on with the job.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 27 September 2024

Good evening.  Joel is due in court today but the start is delayed and eventually it is revealed that he has failed to present himself.  We soon see him skulking around the Street.  Dee Dee reminds everyone that it was supposed to be her wedding day before everything went pear shaped.  DS Swain suggests to Max that it would be best for Lauren to be with him tonight - in our house we are screaming at Lauren not to leave the hospital - but Lauren reluctantly agrees to the suggestion.  However Lauren removes what I suspect is pepper spray from DS Swain's bag.  Joel rolls drunkenly into Roy's and tells the proprietor that he is a decent man.  Joel's guilt has consumed him and he knows he cannot escape it but he refuses to let Roy call the police destroying the wall phone in the process.  He tells Roy he is sorry and will pay if Roy gives him his "Dank betails".  Joel then attempts to apologise for everything, especially to Roy.  Carla knocks on the door and Joel staggers out past her and she dashes in to assist Roy.

To my surprise hospitals in Turkey are expensive, the bill is already £25k and mounting by the minute.  This strikes me as odd as t'internetwebbythingy tells me that they charge 50% - 60% less than the EU (and otherwise why would they be doing liposuction there?) so I am surprised it is that much.  Bethany is struggling to accept that she will have a stoma for the rest of her life.  Sarah does not tell Bethany that she sent Daniel off home with fleas in both ears for causing this.  Sarah has to explain to Bethany that her insurance will not cover an unplanned medical treatment or the consequences, so they are on the hook for the debt and cannot leave the country until it is paid.  Back on t'Street David admits to Daniel that maybe he could have prevented the surgery when he phoned Bethany joking that she would need all day to shed her "love handles" - which obviously tipped her into doing it.  Anyway Bethany is not out of the woods yet and goes into shock.  The diagnosis is pneumonia and treatment is underway.  In the Rovers Daisy tells Jenny that Daniel knocked her back and also reveals that the liposuction was responsible for Bethany's problems.  Daniel is seeking to access Bertie's trust fund but that is not easy.

Hope is suspended from school so has to work in the garage - (doubtful - the H&S paperwork would take about a month).  And she can give up the vapes any time she likes - as she proves when she visits the Corner Shop, sends Aadi on an errand out the back and robs the vapes on the counter.  Aadi finds her later in Victoria Gardens and although she denies the theft initially she hands them over - apart from one which she keeps and smiles to herself at her deception.  She later buys chocolates for Fiz to make up for ruining her birthday yesterday.

Billy is suffering - he is not sure how he will be able to conduct the funeral service - which will be on their first wedding anniversary.  We see Todd later help him from the Rovers after having had a drink or six.

Mason returns to work at Speed Dahl much to the consternation of the Windasses.  Mason has a black eye, allegedly due to his brothers.  Sean tells Daniel he is thinking of consulting Adam to see if Mason's movements can be restricted.  However it is not possible because the CPS did not ask for one at sentencing.  Later Gary goes to sit at a table in Speed Dahl simply to stalk Mason.  However when Maria arrives he orders some food.  Their bill is presented at closing time.  Mason admits to Stu that Gary is right and assures them it was not his brothers who gave him a black eye.  Once it is all closed up we see Mason sneak back into Speed Dahl to settle down for the night - but it seems he was followed.

Joel still a little drunk leaves a message for Dee Dee.  Perhaps there is one thing he can do which will make everyone happy.

So who has been following Mason?  What can Joel do which will make everyone happy?  When will the liposuction become common knowledge?  Will Billy be sober for the funeral/wedding anniversary?  When will Hope stop lying?  All this and more will be revealed next week I have no doubt.
