Mikey North interview: Gary's secret snog with Sarah caught on camera

The past couple of months have been truly awful for Gary and his family - how is he doing?

It’s definitely been a very tricky time for them all. From Gary’s point of view he’s having to look after both Maria and Liam, as well as being concerned about the state of his relationship with Maria, especially with how worried Maria has been about Liam and understandably so. Gary and Maria have different views on how they should be helping Liam which hasn’t helped.

It must have really hurt him when Maria insinuated that Gary wasn’t Liam’s real dad. How did he feel about that?

Yeah, that was really hard and affected him massively. I think Gary has always seen himself as a real father figure to Liam and especially with what they have been through in the last few months, to hear Maria say that really cut him deep. It was the last thing that Gary wanted and needed to hear at that point.

Gary’s actually been quite level headed with everything in comparison to what he used to be like which is a surprise! Do you think he has matured now?

100% yeah! I’m hoping that the last couple of years has been Gary growing up a little bit. It’s been really nice to play that more caring side. Even though, when he’s showing those hot headed moments, it’s more to try and play the Robin Hood character where he’s doing it to the bad people and trying to give the baddies what they deserve as opposed to just doing it because he’s hot headed. Hopefully this is how things will continue because I certainly like playing that more grown up version of Gary now. He certainly seems to have become a more rounded character and the reaction from the public has definitely been more appreciative of this.

Gary is always a family first type of person. How will he feel to realise that whilst he was preoccupied with Sarah, Liam had taken an overdose?

The whole Gary and Sarah thing is something that is always there and unfortunately, it had to her that he was with when such a big thing has happened but you know, that’s the way that Gary’s life tends to go. Gary is genuinely devastated when he finds out what has happened. He didn’t realise that Liam was going to be on his own and everything had just gone wrong.

Do you think Gary will admit to Maria where he actually was?

I think he will intend to let that one lie. It obviously didn’t go well last time when Maria caught them together and I guess he doesn’t want things to blow up. That stress is also the last thing Maria needs on top of everything else, so I think he will try to take matters into his own hands and keep that to himself.

How did Gary feel initially when Maria admitted to having a hidden camera, purely to watch Liam, but caught him and Sarah together?

His first thought was definitely shock but that quickly followed with panic to what Maria had actually seen after what had happened with Sarah making a drunken pass. He managed to get away with it the first time round but I guess in soapland you always get caught in the end! Maria is always one step ahead of the game and puts the camera back, which then leads to Gary and Sarah being caught again. I actually loved filming this scene because obviously I knew what was going to happen and that we were going to get caught, but the timing of Maria walking in was brilliant and even made everyone cringe.

Do you think Maria is pushing Gary away with her desperate actions?

Absolutely. I think that given the nature of what’s going on, it is understandable that Maria is acting like this. Maria just wants the best for Liam and in doing so, it’s to the detriment of her relationship with Gary. Gary knows and understands that Liam has to come first but as I said, Gary and Maria don’t always agree on how they should proceed to help Liam and I think that this is the main cause of their problems.

Is Gary happy with Maria?

I do think he is happy with Maria. They have been through a lot and the family unit has been formed especially with Jake there as well. I think he’s got the family unit that he’s always wanted. Obviously when something as big as this happens, it just throws that spanner in the works. At this moment, I don’t think anyone could be truly happy with everything that’s going on, so it really has thrown their relationship and it will be interesting to see how they can come through this, or not...

Do you think deep down Gary could have any unresolved feelings for Sarah?

I’ve always said the way that Gary and Sarah’s relationship came to an end years ago was a real shame. They were really happy with each other and had been through a lot. They were a really good couple and from a personal point of view, it was a really happy time at work. I thoroughly enjoyed those years working with the Platts and got really nice storylines out of it. I guess there will always be something lingering due to what they went through. They both know each of their deepest, darkest secrets and are probably the only people that know them. I think they will always have that feeling for each other deep down no matter what happens.

Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 29th April

ROY - CORONATION STREET - ITV

So has Roy got a phone in his room? He seems to be constantly on the blower. My boyfriend points out that the phone is plugged into a network (not phone) socket and the telephone base isn't plugged into anything. Tch. Yeah, I have to live with this. Anyway, Roy rings Nina but Shona passes it to Carla and Roy puts the phone down.

NINA - CORONATION STREET - ITV

The projector that Roy has also been given shows Max and Lauren discussing something in the cafe but he can't remember what it was. He snaps at his tame guard and says he wants to be left alone. Nina turns up for her visit, but Roy doesn't because he's collapsed in his cell. He's sent off to Kate Oates Memorial hospital, where he's diagnosed with low blood sugar and dehydration. I think they might just send him back to chokey with a bottle of water and a Snickers rather than giving him a bed but anyway, where Roy is, D.S. Swain is there too and she rocks up to interrogate her chief suspect, but he fobs her off. Roy later tells Carla this is the end of their friendship and he doesn't want her to visit him again. As if!

By the way, I managed to get hold of Hope, Eliza and Sam's Monday Murder Club case notes and here's what they have on Joel:

1. Has a receipt for jewellery (that he claimed was for cufflinks) at the same time Lauren received some bling from her mystery man.
2. Known liar.
3. Suspicious ex-wife turning up just to say how great he was.
4. He now has a reason to disappear (his daughter, or maybe "daughter") to cover up his comings and goings.
5. Never knows what to do with his hands.

I reckon the teens have got him bang to rights.

Tim suggests a top trumps system to mark the women Steve has matched with on the dating app. Surely they have to match with him first? This mainly seems to be an excuse for Tim to do an extremely camp Cilla Black impression in the cab office.

Leanne, all excited from her upload, wants to bring in street food carts or something. I think Chef is going to have a meltdown at that idea, non? Also what happened to the late licence that was such a plot point a couple months ago? Also#2, it feels like that, erm, unpopular storyline with Toyah last week, combined with Leanne's obsession with the Institute, is purely to push Toyah and Nick together. I mean, they've got form what with Leanne and Toyah both going out with Peter and also dallying with Imran. Toyah has had an idea too - bringing to bring in ex-offenders to work at the Bistro; this would solve their staffing issues at least. Leanne can't reality code this and says no way. Isn't she an ex-offender herself?

AMY - PAUL - CORONATION STREET - ITV

Paul uses a different taxi firm than Streetcars who turn up late in the wrong cab, then the disabled toilet in the students' union is locked. He rails against how society treats disabled people and also swears on air, but to no-one's surprise, nobody complains (if you can't swear on student radio, where can you swear?). The students start a crowd-funder to raise money for Paul's MND group - hopefully not by donning fancy dress and selling rag-mags. A mysterious man hears the broadcast and writes down Paul's name and details. Not a stealing money from a charity story, please.

And finally, Adam and Deedee bicker over who gets to do the admin and reception at the solicitors. There are still temp agencies are there not? And Alya is off to the Dublin office of Fabian's (for 9 months?)

Preview of tonight's Coronation Street - Monday 29 April 2024

Monday 29th April 2024

ROY PUSHES HIMSELF TO HIS LIMIT When Roy calls the cafe hoping to speak to Nina, Shona passes the phone to Carla and Carla hangs up, making out it was a dodgy line and hurries out. In his prison cell, Roy has another flashback of Lauren approaching the cafe counter with Max, but can’t work out what’s significant about their conversation. When a prison officer bangs on the door, a frustrated Roy loses his chain of thought. In the factory, Bobby tells Carla that he reckons Roy must have kept quiet about the false statement or the police would have come knocking by now. In the visiting room, Nina explains to the prison officer that she’s waiting for Roy Cropper and as the officer lets himself into Roy’s cell, he finds him collapsed on the floor.

PAUL SWEARS THAT HIS LIFE IS GETTING HARDER Billy helps Paul dress for his radio interview and assures him he’ll smash it. A cab arrives to take Paul and Bernie to the interview and it’s obvious the car isn’t big enough for Paul’s wheelchair. Paul is left furious as the driver is rude and dismissive. As Amy conducts her radio interview with Paul, he talks passionately about his MND and society’s lack of regard for disability in general, but gets carried away and swears live on air. Could this be the end of Amy’s radio presenting career?

STEVE FINALLY HAS SOME LUCK IN LOVE In the cab office, an upbeat Steve tells Tim that since he joined the new dating site Abi recommended, he’s had three matches. In the cafĂ©, Steve shows Abi and Kevin a picture of Maggie, a potential date, and as Kevin makes sexist remarks, Abi storms out in a huff. A delighted Steve tells Tim that Maggie has agreed to meet him for lunch in the Bistro. Is Steve’s luck finally changing?

LEANNE PLANS TO EXPAND THE BISTRO Leanne tells Nick that thanks to Rowan, she’s had a great idea for the bistro and they should do pop-up stalls to broaden their market.  At the mention of Rowan, Nick bristles. Nick reveals Leanne’s plans to expand the business and asks Toyah if she’d manage the bistro in the meantime but Nick’s left disappointed when Toyah turns him down.

ELSEWHERE Alya calls at the solicitors for a client file to find Adam struggling with the admin. When Adam suggests they pull out of the joint work they’re doing with Fabian’s, Dee-Dee accuses him of being petty, orders him to suck it up and get on with the filing.
