Nathan Graham interview: James has heart attack playing football

How does James get roped into playing for the team?

He has been helping to coach the team and then a few people have to drop out and they suggest that he plays for them. He isn't sure as he shouldn’t really be playing for them but it is for charity and he’s a nice guy so he does what he feels is the right thing.

How is the game going before he collapses?

They aren't doing too well at first, the other team are better than them and James is running up and down the length of the pitch. They have just taken the lead back off the other team and James is running back to Shona in goal when he just collapses.

What was it like filming those scenes?

It was a long day getting all the football match scenes in and knowing we had the collapse scenes to film. We had a great director Brett Fallis who had a vision of how he wanted it to look and he showed me some ideas of what he wanted so I knew what was required. I just wanted to make sure I did it justice and that it looks authentic.

How bad does it look for James?

It is really touch and go, he has had a cardiac arrest and there is no defib machine nearby so it is down to Michael to give him CPR whilst they are waiting for the ambulance to come. The paramedics manage to get his heart restarted and he is rushed to hospital. Everyone is really shocked.

Has he been feeling unwell? Or does it just come out of nowhere?

I think it just comes out of nowhere. Obviously he is a fit young man, he is used to playing football and running around, so there's no real signs of it from anywhere. It's just completely out of the blue.

What happens when they get to the hospital?

James is told he’s got cardiomyopathy. And then he's told that he's got to be fitted with an ICD to prevent further cardiac arrests. I guess for James, as a footballer, he kind of has a reference point because obviously he's seen Erickson – as we all saw in the European championships – pretty much the same thing happened to him, and he was then fitted with an ICD. Obviously it's scary going to have surgery. But I think he also knows that going through this process gives him hope, and belief that he will be okay and he'll be back to full health.

Is he worried that he may never play football again?

He is really worried, he has had injury scares before but this is another level and he is anxious for what the future holds if he hasn’t got football any more.

Aggie isn’t at the match when it all happens, so does she feel guilty about that?

Yeah, I imagine she does. But the main thing is that he's okay, I think it would have been much, much worse for her if it had been the other way. But he's okay, she's seen her boy again. I think for her, it's the fear of it happening again. So maybe she's more swayed towards him never playing football again. Or even run up the stairs!

What options are open to James if he can’t play football again?

I don't think he can imagine himself working for his dad or pulling pints in the Rovers, football and sport if all he has ever known. When he was injured last time he got his coaching qualifications so that is an option. Ideally though he wants to go back to playing once he has recovered, but that also lies in the hands of Weatherfield County and the manager so it is a scary time for him.

What was your reaction when this story was pitched to you?

I've been lucky and super grateful I've been given some great stories since I joined so it is brilliant to have another one that might help people. It feels nice and humbling that people trust you with these stories. So hopefully I've done it justice.

Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 29th August

BILLY - SUMMER - ITV - CORONATION STREET

The three gay dads are celebrating Summer's 18th birthday, but it all ends in tears, because of course this is Summer we're taking about. Billy gives her a letter from Drew, her original dad. Then Summer finds out that Billy has organised a glucose monitor (with Aaron's help) and strops off like Leanne. She then rows with Aaron and they split up for the 45th time. They then make up for the 46th time after Summer reads her letter. I just wish they'd go off to Chester.

FERN - BERNIE - ITV - CORONATION STREET

Do Bernie and Fern really look alike? Same height, similar age, blonde hair, but it's not like they're doppelgangers. To be honest, I didn't watch Brookside (apart from the Beth Jordache storyline) so Patricia Farnham doesn't mean much to me; I remember Gabrielle Glaister more as Kate from Blackadder. Anyhoo, Fern returns the uniforms to Bern and suggests she could do a speed awareness course on her behalf for £200 payment.

MARIA - GARY - DEV - AADI - KELLY - ITV - CORONATION STREET

The fiancés are canoodling on Dev's sofa and agree they will tell their families tonight at the Bistro. I'm more invested than I like to admit in Kaadi (certainly more than in Summer and Misery-Loves-Company) - Kelly deserves a bit of fun and Aadi is a nice young man without being a sap like Craig or dreary like Chesney. Thingy from the Gazette says that because Kaadi are under 18, then they'll need to get written permission from their parents, which is a bit difficult since a) nobody knows and b) when they do know, they're not very happy about it. Asha lets slip that it was Kelly who crashed the car and Dev goes off on one, calling Kelly a liability. He then has a go at Gary, accusing him of wanting to palm off the problem child. He grabs Aadi who falls and hurts his face, leading him to storm out as well. Dev goes round to the rose-gold flat and asks Aadi to come home, but he refuses, saying he's moved in with Kel. Kelly then suggests they get married in Gretna Green. I'm getting a Nick 'n' Leanne vibe here - let's hope Kelly doesn't get pregnant and Aadi forces her to have an abortion, right.

DYLAN - SEAN - ITV- CORONATION STREET

Oh and Dylan is staying in Weatherfield. And from what I've read, Violet'll be up soon.

Preview of tonight's Coronation Street - Monday 29th August 2022

Monday 29th August 2022

AADI AND KELLY’S PLAN TO GET HITCHED HITS A HITCH Aadi and Kelly learn that because they’re under 18, the Gazette competition rules require written consent from their parents or guardians. With their ‘secret’ engagement all over the Gazette, Dev, Maria and Gary are all in agreement that Aadi and Kelly are far too young to get married. As Dev and Aadi row over Kelly’s background, Dev grabs Aadi causing him to fall and hit his head. Telling Dev that he’s leaving for good, Aadi storms out.

BILLY’S BIRTHDAY SURPRISE STUNS SUMMER Over a slap-up lunch at Speed Daal to celebrate her 18th birthday, Billy hands Summer a letter which her Dad asked him to give her on her 18th. Summer admits to Billy she’s scared of opening the letter. Billy reveals the diabetic nurse called to confirm she is eligible for a glucose monitor, Summer’s upset that Billy and Aaron went behind her back. After a row with Aaron, Summer reads her Dad’s letter. Will it change her outlook?

SEAN’S LIFE CHANGES IN AN INSTANT Sean confides in Eileen how Dylan wants to move up here. Dylan admits that he lied about being bullied at school because he wants to live with him rather than in London. Sean agrees to speak to Violet.

ELSEWHERE Bernie assures Chesney and Gemma that she didn’t steal Joseph’s uniform. Fern returns the school uniform to Bernie and suggests that as they look so similar, maybe she can help her out. Sarah assures Stephen that she won’t let a knockback from the bank deter her and she’ll find the money some other way.
