Fiz's daughter Hope will be diagnosed with cancer. The Mirror says that Corrie bosses have consulted the charity Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Alliance, doctors and parents of children who have the cancer.
The Mirror says that Hope is five years old, but she was born in December 2010 which makes her only four.
Neuroblastoma, which often develops in the adrenal glands can spread to areas including bones, liver and skin. It makes up 8% of children’s cancers. Fewer than 100 children in the UK are diagnosed each year with most aged five or younger.
The scenes will be aired later this year.

Gosh, I hope this isn't true. Relentless grimness makes for tiring viewing. It's why I've tried and failed to watch Eastenders on a continuous basis.
ReplyDeleteOh come on corrie! Don't go down the EE doom and gloom road! Give your loyal watchers some feel good stories or some Tracy comeuppance storylines. We do not want to see cancer storylines involving children at all! You need to sack your scriptwriters and get people with imagination!

ReplyDeleteI can summon no enthusiasm for this. I don't see the point: since Hope is too young to turn in a stellar performance like Hailey's, this will centre on Fizz and Tyrone, and haven't we just watched them worrying and grieving over Haliey? I'm sure Neuroblastoma groups will welcome the awareness of the condition that will follow in the wake of such a storyline, but I seriously have to question if it's something any viewers will want to be watching. Does SB ever ask himself that question? 'What do our viewers WANT to be watching?'
ReplyDeleteWhile I"m sure the story would be handled well, I think I agree here with the other posters. It was hard enough to see Hayley die of cancer. They likely wouldn't have Hope die but it would be a very difficult storyline to watch and really too grim for Corrie.
ReplyDeleteIf this is true then SB is determined to grind Corrie St into the dust - dreadful storyline and I will definitely not be watching - isn't TV supposed to be escapism?? - there are enough doom & gloom stories in real life - we watch TV to forget all the sad tales - I think Corrie staff really need to rethink SB and most of the writers - time to set this ship in a different direction or at least the way it used to be
ReplyDeleteStuart did this sort of story with Emmerdale. Sarah having a genetic disease and then the saviour sibling story. Does he like little girls to have life threatening illnesses? Not sure another cancer story, especially a childrens one, is what corrie needs right now. Plus I did not miss Fiz one bit whilst she was away and if true this would sadly mean more screen time from her.

ReplyDeleteIf they want to do a storyline about a child's on-going medical condition, there are many of these that parents have to cope with every day. It would have to be physical otherwise the writers would forget about it eg David and his epilepsy. But this story, as Cobblestone says, is about Fiz and Tyrone not the baby. Fiz will have to become likeable between now and then in order for viewers to care.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Tvor, the story will be handled well. It'll focus on Tyrone and Fiz and bring awareness to the cancer charity too. Soap is drama, it can't all be humour and light, sadly.
ReplyDeleteThe story might be handled well in the writing but Jennie McAlpine is a terrible actress. I can't think of anyone less capable in the current cast.
ReplyDeleteI agree with posters who are not looking forward to this story. Sadly I haven't missed Jenny MacAlpine since she has been gone. I was turned right off her character the way she constantly nagged and pestered Roy. I don't think Jenny or Alan are good enough actors to handle such a heavy storyline. I may take a break from viewing over 40 years when this story airs.
ReplyDeleteI watch coronation street for entertainment and an escape from reality. I love the humir and drama. I dont want be reminded of cancer, especially childhood cancer as I enjoy my favorite television program. Some serious issues just dont need to be tackled. Just too serious

On the surface it sounds awful, if it's true. I think Corrie handles darker stories way better than EE, which I find dire and grimy even when it's upbeat. It's a fact that more young kids are getting cancer than ever before. I often wonder why. At the same time, hundreds of new chemicals are regularly released into the world via all the goods we use in our homes and neighbourhoods. "They" say they're safe. Most are, but not all are required to be regulated, esp. here in North America. Like those air deodorizers.
ReplyDeleteI doubt it will happen, but I'd love to see the writers at least give a mention to healthier living if this story comes up, or even woven into other stories.
Just for the growing number of kids with cancer, I think this would be a good story to raise awareness.
And now that I'm already having eyeballs rolled at me - I like Fiz! I've waited for her to get her mojo back since she was a teen, when I first enjoyed her fiestiness and crazy clothing designs. I still think it could happen. Hear me, writers?

ReplyDeleteIt was bad enough seeing Hayley bully Roy during the last months of her life so I'm not looking forward to Fiz doing the same to Tyrone and little Ruby being neglected in the process.I wonder if Chesney will have to contact Katie because Hope needs a bone marrow transplant and Joseph is the only compatible donor?
ReplyDeleteAt the risk of sounding cynical,if little Hope does die,I wonder how soon before she'll be forgotten by her mother just as Jake Websteris forgotten by his father and Billy Grimshaw is forgotten by his mother.
So what would the point of this story line be? To have Fiz observe the suffering of her child so that she can learn to appreciate why Hayley chose to end her life? Sounds too morbid for soap.
