Colson Smith apologies for posting illegal picture

Colson Smith, who plays Coronation Street's Craig Tinker, has apologised after taking a picture while behind the wheel of his car.

Digital Spy reports that Colson actor posted a photo on Snapchat marvelling at the falling snow while he was at a standstill on a motorway.

"I apologise for taking the photo," he said (via The Sun). "I was in stationary traffic and didn't think about the implications of what I was doing. I realise now how irresponsible this was and will not be doing it again."

A safety spokesperson for RAC added: "We hope the highlighting of this case serves as a valuable lesson to both the person concerned and every other driver. The consequences of using a handheld phone at the wheel can be tragic and we need to make this as socially unacceptable as drink-driving."

Colson isn't the first Corrie actor to have been caught doing this. Kate Ford was also forced to issue an apology after she was caught at it too.

It's wrong, people, don't do it.

If you're in your car driving, whether it's moving or not, PUT YOUR FLAMING PHONE AWAY!

If you use your phone in your car, even when it's stationary, it's illegal. It's something I personally feel very strongly about. In the UK it is only legal to use a phone while driving as long as it is hands-free.
It’s been illegal to use a hand held mobile phone while driving, or while stopped with the engine on, since December 2003. (Source: the AA)

Ok, I'm going to go out on a limb here and expose myself....
I never use my handheld phone for text or talk while driving (I can talk via Bluetooth like most).
But I too have snapped a pic (of a beautiful rainbow) at a red light. Not a busy intersection whatsoever, but nonetheless, I did it.
I will join our Craig in his public shame...

I don't get it. He was at a standstill, so where is the problem?

Why is it not illegal to put on your lippy or eating? Taking a picture at standstill is absolutely fine, it is rubbish how it would cause an accident!

Let's be honest, the law exists because it's far too tempting to go from taking a picture with your phone while at standstill, to retaking it because it didn't come out right, to noticing you got a few messages or texts while you fiddle with the camera app, to reading one or two of them "just this once" because it's really important.
Meanwhile traffic has started up again and you're distracted. Hang in there and respect the law, it will soon become obsolete: driverless cars are literally around the corner.

I too see nothing wrong in taking a pic when you are in stand still traffic. To compare this to drink-driving I think is an exaggeration.
