Incidental music on Coronation Street - Yay or Nay?

I'm hating the increasing use of incidental music in Coronation Street and I want it to stop right now.

But if Corrie are going to continue using it, then do it right - make it appropriate.

Play The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba every time Liz walks from the back room into the bar at the Rovers Return.

Play Sisters by The Beverley Sisters every time we see Toyah and Leanne together, with a repeat of the refrain: "...god help the mister who gets between me and my sister and god help the sister, who gets between me and my man."

Play This Charming Man by The Smiths when Roy Cropper's buttering the bacon barms in Roy's Rolls.

Play Lovely Rita The Beatles every time the big red one marks up the papers in The Kabin.

Our blogger Emma ran a poll on twitter on Christmas Eve with the majority of those voting objecting to the use of incidential music...

What do you think? Incidental music on Coronation Street - Yay or Nay?

And can you suggest any more relevant songs for your favourite Corrie characters?

No, no and no again. Never, ever. It's not Corrie.

Agree 100%. It'/s not Hollyoaks (thank goodness)

It's not hollywood , it's not right and рroduces lots of stuрid montages and stuрid exрressions on the actor's faces :(

Generally I'm not in favour, in fact I'm against. As an occasional one-off it has worked in the past, like the end of the story about Sarah's internet stalker in 2001. But under Kate Oates it's started cropping up far too often and often for absolutely no reason.

Please stop it now.

No No No No and, most emphatically, NO!!!

Why is it that, no matter what is great about anything, we have to change it to be more like the Americans? Being absolutely nothing like American television is the best thing about Corrie - always has been.

Please get rid of the new crap and get us back to the high standards that we all love.

Nay, nay and thrice nay! I'm in Weatherfield whilst I'm watching and don't want to be transported away on a surge of stringed instruments, like in an American / Aussie daytime soap! That Llandudno snow-globe ending was pure schmaltz.

Yay! I enjoy the music selections used and find they bring more realism to the show.

See, i don't mind it. Aside from music that comments on or complements a scene, "musical ambiance" type stuff, I don't really pay much notice to the other incidental music. I mentioned on another post, I think it's because I spent decades watching American soaps though haven't watched them for a few years now, but it's a very common thing on those shows so I'm used to hearing it.

No way! If we don't start a рrotest soon, the we'll have it in every eрisode to convey every рossible emotion an actor should have - we are not dummies, we don't need music to tell us when to laugh, cry, shout boo - maybe they should hold uр cue cards reading 'aaah!' 'oooh!' 'weeр', etc - that's when we'll all switch off!!

Absolutely NO. So tired of trying to hear the dialogue over crap music or singing on so many TV series. If Corrie starts doing this I will stop watching. So unnecessary.

We've got excellent scriptwriters and actors to tell us what to feel and how to react, that's what drama is.

Incidental music is an insult to those professionals.

I don't want to seem controversial here, but I like the incidental music. Obviously, I don't want it in every episode, but if it enhances the scene or the storyline, then it's great. I think that because Corrie barely uses it, then fans have become used to it and don't like change. That is something that I really don't understand. Sure, I might be very young (17) compared to other viewers over the past 56 years, but especially at Christmas, it's something that SHOULD be used. I watch both Corrie and Emmerdale, and Emmerdale's Christmas episode was by far superior. Emmerdale have done so much work with incidental music and experimental episodes and have succeeded. I don't know if Corrie is scared to do this because they are the BIG SOAP in the UK and tarnishing their reputation, but they could at least try as it's worked with other soaps.

They need to move with the times and as for incidental music, I would love it more often. I'm excited to see what Kate Oates does in the future, especially with the move to six episodes next year. Other viewers should give her a chance. She's a whole lot better than Stuart Blackburn...

The entire way Corrie is produced now is quite reflective in many ways. Just how the show is 'shot' now shows extensive differences. Different camera angles and varying editing changes to enhance scenes. I noticed this right away...
More outside scenes taking advantage of the new set for one, as well as creating a more realistic approach to actually living on a street where interaction would take place.
The use of music to also enhance scenes is not as bad as some of you are making out. For me it shows a genius if they do get it right when choosing a song. Funny though, I have not really noticed it as much...and frankly, the music is doing it's job...the subliminal touch. Overall, I am liking the improvements Kate Oates has brought to the table...that fresh take that the show needed. Other Producers trying to recapture the Corrie of old really didn't get it right...
How can you capture the old really?

While I appreciate the enhancements, particularly camera and set usage, brought in by the new show runner, I'm very hesitant to accept soaring background music that is present in many scenes with different characters in the same episode, sometimes not even intended for all the scenes it's played over. It's not subtle, but builds to a crescendo. (I also notice radio music in characters' homes is played more loudly lately too. Yuck, annoying!)

I'm also concerned that it's a slippery slope to over-usage and manipulation of viewers' emotions. For me that's a cheap trick used in almost all American TV, whether it's soap, comedy or more high-brow drama. Look at what happened to Dr. Who, now that it's popular in the US. It's essence is there, but coated in so much saccharine goo it's barely the same show any more. I don't want to see that happen to our Corrie.

Deffo not.

I think it makes the show a lot less realistic.

Well, Tyler, would it surprise you that Kate Oates was previously the producer at Emmerdale? You seem to like it a lot better now, which means you like it better since she left.

I don't mind music that's on in the background of a scene - clever choices add a little texture. What I completely and utterly dislike is the use of music across scenes to force emotion or set scebes as was used on Christmas day and on the last "explosive" episode. It's tacky, unrealistic and 100% not Corrie.

another homeless/thief/lowlief girl turns up in corrie probably ends up as David's girlfriend and becomes the pillar of the community, just like Beccky, Kylie,Gemmer ,same old same old ,changing people's personality (andy)for a few episodes just to fit the story line.i could go on so i never even heard the music its the least of whats wrong with corrie these days

Realism? Must be great to live in your world, Joe, where, at moments of high tension or emotion, an orchestra starts to play soaring string melodies. No? Actually, now this has got me thinking of the comical possibilities of this being a real thing. Can you imagine how awkward it would be, with every shred of one's emotion suddenly announced polyphonically to the whole world in full Wagnerian tone-colours?

I agree, the lowlife character has become an annual event like the annual murder, fire, crash, will-they-won't-they wedding...

NO NO NO NO ! in the pub yes , the occaisonal time but not in every scene ! it is not necessary . It just doesn't fit Corrie !

Anonymous said...

It’s annoying and sometimes very inappropriate!
