Helen Worth "nervous" about getting axed from Coronation Street

When a new producer takes over at Coronation Street, there's usually a spate of stories in the tabloids about cast members feeling nervous about 'getting the chop' from Corrie.  And there's another of these stories today in the Daily Star Sunday.

Helen Worth, who plays Gail Rodwell, tells the Star: “You do get nervous. It’s new beginnings. You’re in their hands. You just keep your fingers crossed and hope they want the character to continue. I don’t ask questions, I just get on with the job. I’ve no idea how long I’ll be on the show. Let’s just see.”

“They’ve looked after me for 42 years so I leave it all in the safe hands of the writers. I work with such wonderful people. As long as I’m working with those people I’m happy.”

Gail used to be such a live wire until they made her a dope. I hope she continues to live on the Street though I'd be happy if the Platt family was rested for a while. There may be some surprise exits that they've kept under wraps for fear of ruining a storyline. Would rather spoil the fun if we'd read that Ben Price was leaving, for example. I wonder if Chesney will come back from Portugal. Quite unrealistic that he'd get a job out there but gets rid of the character. I do hope the new producer has got the guts to make some radical changes.

Let's just hope we see a bit of the 'old' Gail. The Gail that used to be with Alma in the cafe. Not this silly, soft, batty eyed Gail.

No way would they get rid of Gail. Helen can breathe easy.

Agree with Beth. If we don't get more of the "old" Gail back - then I wouldn't miss her at all if she left.

Yes. They've made some serious mistakes with her character in recent years. They did the same with Deirdre in her final years. Both seem to lose all their brain cells, and started behaving like complete simpletons. The writers and producers should value these really long standing characters, and see that they are true to her character's histories. I know that some may have have found Deirdre amusing in this phase, but nobody seems to find Gail anything other than irritating in recent years. Helen Worth is one of the show's most powerful dramatic actresses when given the right material,so hopefully we'll see this recognised by the new producer. It would be great to see Gail develop into one of the show's great matriarchs. We've seen a little less comedy from her, since Michael's departure. So the first thing that needs to be done is ensuring that there is no reconciliation when he returns. The old Gail would never have looked twice at somebody like him. So,fingers crossed that there is a new dawn on the horizon for this Street legend.

I may be in the minority but I wonder why shouldn't Gail get the axe?Other characters who are as iconic like Derek Wilton have gotten the axe so why should she be 'protected?I also wonder the same thing with Ken and Tracy.
I don't see her as any great matriarch due to her almost incestual obsession with her son Nick.A perfect example was when Nick and Kylie had their drunken one night stand and not only did she keep quiet to protect her 'golden boy'but David unfairly in my opinion was the 'villain' and thrown out of his own house by his mother!I dread her reaction when if hits the fan about Carla and Robert as she'll be fussing over Nick again and not in a good way.

Gail simpering over Nick is a long-standing character trait, and shows her over-protectiveness as a parent. However, the simpering idiot part of her is new, and I agree with a previous poster - - let's see a return to the character who was capable enough to run a café. I hate what they have done to Gail.

Given how all of the this show's sacred cows have been slaughtered of late ( the humour, the strong women, the kitchen sink drama, the financial struggles of the working poor) there is no reason why any character should be safe. Even the set has been replaced. In fact I do not know why they bother keeping the name even as it bears so little resemblance to the show I used to once enjoy.

I wouldn't miss her. I don't rate her as an actress at all.

I'm sure Helen Worth is a very lovely lady in her real life but one wonders why she is still in Corrie. i think it's time to lose Gail,.

I honestly don't know what direction they should take Gail, she's been backed into a corner of granny in the annex, obsessed with interfering in her children's lives and little else on the go.
