Kym Marsh offered mega deal to stay on Coronation Street

The Sun reports today that Kym Marsh has been offered a year-long contract extension to stay on in Coronation Street as Michelle Connor.

And in the words of the tabloid, it's a "mega" deal which will see Kym take over the reins from Alison King, who plays Carla Connor, as the new "female star" of Corrie.

As always, with an unconfirmed story source, take things with a pinch of salt unless or until otherwise confirmed by ITV.

Mr Curry Sauce tells The Sun: "She [Kym] will take over from Alison as Corrie's best all round performer being involved in the top storylines all the time. Losing Alison has been a devastating body blow deep down to the inner sanctum because not only was she a tremendous actress but Carla was seen as having everything for a soap role, sexiness, funny, ruthless, a boozer and depressive at the same time but all the time must watch TV. There is no doubt that Kym can step into her [shoes] no problem – and the bosses are chuffed to bits."

However a source for the show, as well as Kym Marsh’s spokesperson, have both denied the claims. The ITV source told Metro.co.uk that the rumour is ‘totally untrue’ explaining that as Kym’s contract ends in July, no negotiations have yet taken place surrounding her next one.

REINS, surely...

Anyway I'm not sure Michelle would be able to fill the queenly footsteps of Carla; she simply doesn't command the same respect from the residents.

A mega deal, and it's only a one year renewal, same as everyone else gets? I think that's the whole salt mine we ought to be pinching. :) Is Michelle now going to be the one that gets beaten, bashed and boozed, and Tracy's new target for vengeance? Doubt it. They tried to make Michelle the center of the world some time ago and it was non stop drama then, (remember the baby switch?). We all tired of her pretty quickly back then.

Oh and if you're talking about "queenly" footsteps, then yes, it would be "REIGNS" wouldn't it? ;)

I nearly choked when I read this. What about Kate Ford? She is kept busy as well. Michelle Connor - I like her, but really...to call her the new female star? Good golly. I think it is more of an ensemble cast...or are Gail, Sally, and the rest of the women just chopped liver? LOL
As for grammar corrections on the posts...very sad indeed.
I think Anonymous may be a pot stirrer.

The thing is, Michelle has had big storylines in the past but she is definitely more suited to a supporting role (like her role in Steve's depression story or her friendship with Carla). I think the writers know this.
Also, Alison King as Carla Connor is in a league of her own. Incomparable and irreplaceable.

It could be good news. The writers are forced to write to the capacity of the star actress. Kim is better at light comedy than the revenge/rape/murder storylines. Perhaps the writers will to her strength and Corrie will finally listen up.

I agree Michelle works much better as a supporting character than as an ongoing central player. But to an extent that's true of anybody. I think we would even get tired of Roy if we saw him as a central character in almost every storyline or episode.

Maybe instead of stuffing a small handful of characters down our throats until we collectively gag they can try to remember they have an ENSEMBLE cast, and use it.

No such thing. Newspaper rubbish.

Oh jeez, I hope that doesn't not mean they will split her and Steve up and make it all depressing and angst filled all the time.

I doubt this is true. She's not a strong enough character and the last time she had a big storyline viewers got sick of her.

I'm sorry, but there is no way that you can compare the actors who portray Michelle & Carla. Yes, she is good looking, yes she works well with Steve, but that is about the extent of it. There is no way she can replace Alison King. She just doesn't have it. Sorry, but that isn't going to work and you can't fool the viewers. If you think the rating are dismal now, just wait, it will get worse. Remember when she left the last time to have her baby?? (the storyline was she left with Ciaran on the cruise ship) we didn't even miss her, so she really hasn't changed or advanced her career. She is great in the pub as Steve's wife and Liz' best friend, but that is about it.

Please let this be a load of toss. Kym Marsh does not have the acting chops to pull it off. And as for the Grammar Nazi, give it a rest already.

I can fold my arms and look disdainful as well as Kym - can i have a 'megadeal' too! ;)

Yes, I think this is just hogwash. It's the papers trying to sell and nothing more.
I like Michelle, but I agree that she's nowhere near Carla's league.
Besides, I don't see how she's fit into that role either...Carla is almost on the brink of death almost every couple of months, if they start that with Michelle, it's going to get old fast.
I don't think this is true anyway.

Oh but you need to pout at the same time. If you can do that then the job is yours.

There will probably be articles calling other characters "the new Carla Connor" now that Alison King is leaving. That always happens when the strong characters go... There's a bit of panic and then there's a desperate attempt to 'replace' something that is missed.

Kym is this week co presenting the breakfast show on Manchester radio station key 103, of which she is doing a great job. She put this story well and truly to bed. She said her contract runs till June, and hasn't even started to discuss a new one yet, let alone sign it. She also laughed off suggestions of taking over the Carla role. Hope this helps
