Coronation Street episode review, Wednesday 20 January

Hello! It's Jordan again with a review of Wednesday's Corrie.

"No one's gonna hurt you again. I promise"
Last night's episode picked up right where Monday's left off, which always makes for an interesting episode full of high drama. Panicked residents phone an ambulance for Carla, who is lying on the Street with only a faint pulse after falling out of a moving car when fighting to get her handbag back from Jamie and his fellow thug. Tracy looks on with jealousy as Robert tries to help Carla. I mean, how dare he help a woman who's just nearly died! The regulars gather in the pub to wait for news, with Liz dishing up her own opinion on the robbery. She wouldn't leave the house again if someone stole her handbag, since all her makeup is in it.

At the hospital, it transpires that Carla has several broken ribs, a broken wrist and a dislocated shoulder. However, even more worryingly, it has become apparent that she is suffering from internal bleeding and an operation is imperative. Johnny becomes annoyed with the nurse, fearing he may lose his newly-found daughter. Back at the pub, Liz gets a phone call and reveals to the regulars about Carla's surgery. Leanne choked out a very rushed line of remorse, acknowledging that they have their differences but she doesn't deserve this. The doctors manage to stop the bleeding and Nick dramatically rises to his feet and breathily asks to see her. As Nick is talking to a sedated Carla, the Wicked Witch of Weatherfield lurks in the background,  looking on through the room's window. She knows something which could blow that relationship apart, but it looks as if she is biding her time.

There's more secret-keeping and lying at the Platt household when David discovers Jason in Gail's granny flat. He's only doing some measurements but David goes mad nonetheless. Gail is desperate for underfloor heating and can't understand why David and Kylie are so set against it. I can. They claim that it would create too much mess and tell her it's far too late to be making any building alterations to the annex now. Are we finally about to see the end of the body under the patio - I mean - the body under the garage storyline? This blogger certainly hopes so. It's an interesting one but I would be more than happy to see the whole thing wrapped up now. But one request - don't send Kylie to jail! Although with the recent news of Paula Lane's second pregnancy, a jail sentence for Kylie seems unfortunately inevitable.

"We decided it wouldn't be worth the mess"
"You decided it wouldn't be worth the mess. But then, you're not the one sleeping in a fridge, are you?"

Elsewhere, we were treated to a lovely performance by Melanie Hill as Cathy last night, who was trying her best to convince Roy that he really should go back to visit Sylvia and look after her. With the news of Carla, she makes him realise that life is short and he needs to overlook his mother's acid-tongued ways.

Pat Phelan is being treated as the hero of the hour after helping Carla. He is also shaping up to become Kevin's new friend, which will make things difficult for the newly formed Kevanna. Pat later notices Anna stood in her doorway and she is terrified. Earlier on, he told Kevin that they have a bit of history. This can only spell trouble and the idea of putting Pat as Kevin's new friend seems incredibly contrived and overdone to me.

But, to finish this review on a high, there was a sweet scene in the Rovers with Audrey, Ken, Sophie, Sally and Tim as they discussed the council's plan to remove Maddie's memorial, classing it as graffiti. This leads to a conversation about Audrey's days as the Mayoress of Weatherfield and how she got to meet Prince Charles and she won't let us forget it- something which was rightly predicted at the time.
"They're not gonna listen to you, councillors are always the same"
"Excuse me, Sally, I was a councillor"
"Yeah, but you weren't very good at it. You were only in it for the perks"

A good episode which hopefully moved things forward.

Thanks for reading!

Something really took me aback last night - why on earth did Anna phone Izzy and ask her to come to see her to tell her about Phelan - bearing in mind Izzy trundles about in a wheelchair and Anna's flat is upstairs. Surely it would've been easier for Anna to go to Izzy?

And, while I'm on, where was Faye? She couldn't have been at Anna's when all the Phelan discussion was going on, and Tim was in the pub.

Oh, and where has Gary disappeared to?

Enjoyable write up! Paula Lane's pregnancy has certainly given the writers a 'get out of jail' card. This story has gone on and on, and probably because the writers didn't know how to wrap it up. Johnny's outburst about hospitals being there to save people was tiresome. In the real world, he'd have been told that his disrespectful behaviour wouldn't be tolerated. Sally is great but there's a danger that she'll be ruined. Her snobbery is becoming very unsubtle, and I hope she doesn't end up too sitcom snooty. Most depressing news has been the development of the florists and Interflora's sponsorship meaning yet more of Tracy.

Personally, I am kind of tired of hearing about Maddie, They have done more to keep her spirit alive than they have done for Deirdre. She was Sophie's girlfriend for all of 5 minutes and on the street for a short time compared to others. Enough with the over done tributes and story lines.

I always enjoy reading your posts, Jordan Lloyd Beck.

Paula Lane said a while back that she wants to try her luck in Hollywood and that she will probably leave Corrie before her son starts school so I wasn't surprised when the writers decided that Kylie would be the one who would kill Callum. I guess her next, and probably permanent exit from Corrie will be shortly after Carla Connor's.

I can't deny I am disappointed with the direction of Carla's exit storyline. After 10 years, she deserves to go out on a high, like Becky did. The viewers deserve another fantastic exit like that! But instead, the writers seem to be going down the "Tracy gets revenge on Carla again" route.

Wouldn't say so much if it wasn't for the fact that we've had to watch it happen repeatedly.

- Last year, the focus of the minibus crash was Tracy's jealousy and hatred of Carla and basically, making viewers wonder if she would leave her to die or save her

- Then it was the Victoria Court fire, which was about Tracy getting revenge by letting Carla (and everyone else) blame herself for Kal and Maddie's deaths to the point where she was suicidal. Tracy got away with that

- Then it was the robbery - which involved Tracy walking away and doing absolutely nothing to help Carla because she discovered Robert had slept with her once when they weren't together.

That annoys me more because for all Tracy knew those men could have raped the woman and killed her and that will all be forgotten because Carla will survive and the writers will have Tracy seeking revenge on her for the hundredth time. No doubt it'll involve her ruining Nick's "perfect" wedding and then Carla will leave.

Adding to that is the former Mr Nice guy, Robert, who is now apparently a villain like Tracy. He's supposedly desperate to get Nick's business so I imagine he will be a big part of the 'Tracy gets revenge on Carla' tedium.

I just went on a long rant and forgot to say that despite all that, I did really enjoy Wednesday's episode lol. Corrie has been brilliant this week.

Zagg,I agree with you about Maddie,Sophie is portraying her as a marty Kal also died in the fire saving Amy I may add and yet there's been no tribute storylines about him with either Leeanne or the Nazirs.
If memory serves me correctly, the writers did the same thing to Tina after she was murdered and now no one has mentioned her at all so perhaps it will be the same with Maddie should Sophie be paired with Kate.

I will second the post by Anon above that said Carla deserves to go out on a high like Becky did. Becky's exit was brilliant!
I'm hoping that after Tracey does her evil reveal, and probably wrecking everything around her in the process, that Carla, as her final triumph, will give Tracey a comeuppance like never before.
(I know Tracey's had comeuppances before, but she deserves a complete and utter smackdown.)
I can dream, can't I?
