Coronation Street Double Episode Review 18 January 2016

So they're back on and Ken is pleased - Tracy and Robert of course. Turning into a domestic goddess, but briefly, Tracy has cooked full English breakfasts. Cooking is not going too well in the Bistro as a workman succeeds in cutting a cable. While Steph and Andy enjoy their unexpected day off, Nick is on the phone trying to get someone to come and fix the electrics in his Bistro where he claims 18 people are waiting for their lunch. Heroic Robert is there, doing what he can. Carla takes her chance and goes over to tell him, 'We need to talk.' She tries to dissuade him from buying into Nick's Bistro, but he won't budge. Unbeknown to both of them, Tracy, dressed to kill has arrived to surprise Robert. She overhears all they say including the reference to the time Carla and Robert slept together and Tracy's opinion of her. 'Tracy is an evil manipulative cow.'  Robert tells Carla that he feels sorry for Nick marrying a 'train wreck'. Carla throws a glass at him. She warns him, 'Don't be fooled. You push, I'll push back.'

Robert leaves and Carla takes the opportunity to have a few glasses of wine in peace, wholly unaware of the fact that Steph's ex-boyfriend and his accomplice are waiting outside the Bistro and that Tracy is in the kitchen. Tired of waiting for Steph,  Jamie and his mate burst in and demand to know where the safe is. Carla's explanations that she doesn't work there are given short shrift and she tells them that if they just leave now, having done nothing wrong, all will be well. Jamie though decides to grab Carla's bag into which she has slipped her engagement ring. She charges after him but he jumps in the car and starts up the engine. As the car moves off, Carla won't let go. Robert, out to buy wine for himself and Tracy shouts 'Hey! Stop that car!'  Of all people, it is Phelan who bravely stands in the middle of the road to try to make the car stop. Kevin grabs him and drags him out of the way. Carla lies in an unconscious heap on the ground.

Roy returns. His mother, Sylvia, described by Anna as a 'force of nature, a hurricane, an earthquake.' has despatched 4 carers in as many days. According to Roy, she has done so with 'her usual insensitivity and acid tongue.' She is now refusing to let anyone in.

Anna and Kevin are discovered kissing in the garage by the very person they least wanted to find them - Sally. Sally asks, perhaps to make sure her eyes are  not deceiving her, 'Kevin! What are you doing?' Then to Sophie, 'Look what I found!. These two groping each other like a couple of teenagers.' Fortunately they are needed back at Craig's memorial of Maddie which the council are trying to get rid of.

Apart from having two grown up daughters with him, it seems a little odd that Sally would mind Kevin going out with Anna. Fundamentally, it seems that in Sally's opinion Anna is not good enough and that it is a reflection on her, which is her real objection. 'I thought he had better taste, 'adds Sally.

Ken goes to the salon to discover a stressed Audrey. He would like to have a drink with her this evening, but she claims that she and Gail are going to see a film. Asked which film, Gail comes out with Mad Max, all about 'car chases and dystopian futures,'  adds David. Not then the obvious choice for a hairdresser in late middle age, but then, people do surprise you. Gail tells her mother that Ken would have known that Audrey was lying. Maybe Audrey wants to delay anything happening between her and Ken too soon in the wake of Nessa. Probably wise, for now.

Gail invites Audrey round to experience how cold it is in her bedroom. Audrey suggests a thick rug, but Gail doesn't want that. She wants underfloor heating, which is very expensive. Jason is asked in to see what might be able to be done. Gail quizzes him about Michael and Eileen but Jason's not going along with it. Viewers are naturally thinking about Callum's body, decomposing underneath tons of concrete.

I did quite enjoy tonight's episodes, but I wondered how much more enjoyable they would have been without the spoilers. Certainly the Pat Phelan reappearance would have been a shock. Lots more Anna-angst to come now I'm sure. Yawn.

Tracy and Carla fued reignited, Phelan and Anna. Nutter guy after Steph, again. Round and round, repeat repeat, recycle and reuse. Boring.

maybe that is why Corrie received the recycling award - it wasn't about saving the earth - it was about recycling old storylines.

We've already had the annual fire and Carla fetching up in hospital and we're not clear of January yet! I can't wait for this year's murder and 'we know who dunnit' snoozefest (the one after the Callum saga that ties in with airing Britain's Got Tallent or I'm a Celebrity...).

What's more annoying is the media headlines "Will tracy leave Carla for dead?" How was that even possible? She left when she heard the burglars come in. Carla wasn't anywhere near injured at that point. Tracy was home by the time the accident occurred and as far as we know, Alison King will be in the show for a little longer so it's not a "car crash and exit" like the other headline is screaming. Jeeeez.

Otherwise, I thought the episodes were pretty good.

I had to laugh when Jamie's eyes were about six inches from Carla's Elizabeth Taylor-sized engagement ring, and he never even noticed it. I'm surprised he wasn't blinded by the candle light glinting off it.

I agree about Phelan. His first scenes were shot with his face obscured, and seeing who it was when Anna did, ought to have been a huge shock. But alas, his return has been so widely reported, that the moment was wasted. No wonder they are called "spoilers".

Blimey, there was a lot going on last night! I thought the two episodes were very well paced, with some great lines ("Don't tell him, Craig!" - Sally in full Captain Mainwairing mode), and thoroughly enjoyed them. Yes, it is a shame about the spoilers - I could do without them, too.

Have I missed what has happened to Simon? Is he still around being brutal and now forgotten or have I genuinely missed the episode when he was shipped off to another relative. It just crossed my mind last night when Leanne was sitting in the pub on what seemed an all dayer, with not a care in the world. No mention of Simon, his tea, getting back from school or even his existence, nor has there been for a while. Poor me Leanne, has been gone a while and snarky to Carla Leanne is back. So is Simon behaving now? Leanne got a grip of the situation or has it been forgotten like so many storylines before it, David's epilepsy, Todd once a lawyer, Izzy's child, Shariff/ Roy and Cathy's allotments......

I was wondering the same thing also - where he is - not that I really miss him, but it was strange that he wasn't even at the Christmas day special. Neither was Gary - surely he would have taken his son to see Santa Claus and we haven't seen him in ages - is he living at the gym and working 24/7? It's strange how they just seem to forget about some characters - same with Alya & Sharif. No matter how many scenes we have at the factory she isn't included anymore. Did I miss something? I guess it is true that they have such a large cast that certain members just fall through the cracks, never to be seen again.

I was wondering who was looking after Jack while Kevin spent the night with Anna.

Does Sophie live with her dad? If so, he has a live in babysitter, I suppose.
