Strewth! Free-to-watch Coronation Street axed in Australia

Sad news for Coronation Street fans in Australia reached Blog Towers this week.

Coronation Street has been axed in Australia by Channel 7Two.  It was screening weekdays at 4:30pm on 7Two the digital free to air broadcaster, and was showing classic episodes from 8 years ago. It has been replaced by repeats of classic sitcoms instead.

Corrie fan Barrie Turnbull in Australia contacted Channel 7 and was told that they "no longer have the rights" to show Coronation Street.

Although Coronation Street can still be seen on Australian TV until 2020, on Foxtel, fans have to pay to watch this channel. Foxtel's UKTV is now the only channel in Australia to show all five UK soaps.

The final episode showed touching scenes between Audrey and Fred leading up to his wedding. There was no warning that the end of Coronation Street was near, simply a voice over notice on the credits after the final episode (as far as I know). Such disappointing news, particularly as there was a huge uproar in NZ not too long ago when the episodes were going to be shown at a stupid time if my memory is good, people power won and TVNZ carried on with the wishes of the viewers paramount.

One of the cable stations here in Canada did the same thing years ago, they aired the older shows and just stopped with no warning. Their contract had r un out and they didn't buy any more episodes.

Tvor, I remember the uproar from fans when that happened! It was on the then-named W network, and I was involved in the huge email, petition and letter writing campaign. The internet wasn't as developed back then and lots of people wrote actual letters. We didn't stand a chance because the station had been sold to a new owner.

My heart goes out to fans in Australia. Chopping Classic Corrie is one thing, but free to air new eps - yikes!

What this article doesn't say is Coronation Street in showing on Foxtel Cable TV. Episodes are three weeks behind UK and are shown 5 days a week.
Who wants to watch an eight year series when you can watch the latest.

Actually UKTV has also just axed "Doctors" too without warning to much complaining from fans on their facebook page. So they actually don't show all 5 soaps now, only 4

Anonymouseat 9.54 - the article above indeed say that it's available on Foxtel - for a fee.

Couldn't believe that Channel 72 axed Corrie. We loved our weekly daily fix, especially as it was free:) We didn't care that it was 8 years behind as it was all new to us. We can't keep up with taped programmes as it is let alone without paying for Foxtel:( Wish there was a Corrie channel where you could catch up with episodes. Guess for now we will have to watch episodes on YouTube here and there.

So upset with Channel 72 for axing Corrie - it was my little piece of home each day! I too have searched the net trying to find a way of watching from Series 47 Episode 196 - no luck, not even on You Tube. Am not interested in seeing the new ones, wouldn't know any of the cast! Please let another station take on from where Channel 72 left off !!

I agree with you 100%. Hope there is a way we can get it back somehow!

I am so upset it's been axed, As a lot of you have said, it's something to watch from back home.
It never bothered me how old the episodes were. I watched everyday or would record it so I never missed an episode.
This happened to Emmerdale and that never came back :(

I am so disappointed that 7two axed Coronation street. I am devastated. I watched everyday for years. Typical of the networks and they now have Goodnight Sweetheart which originally aired on the ABC and has been repeated numerous times.

Does anyone want to start a petition to get it back? I rang channel 7 and put in a complaint. The more people complain, the better

Definitely have to get Coronation Street back on Free To Air TV!
This show has a HUGE following in Australia and I don't believe this fluff about "contracted episodes" running out etc.
So sick of shows being repeated....just let the show run....get a "new" contract to continue it idiots!
AAARRGGHHHH!!!!!!

Totally agree. So disappointed, take off some of the stupid crap and bring back Corro! Get a new contract!

I went all the way to Manchester in May to spend a morning on the old set of Corrie. It was a blast, the tour was fantastic, saw all the old sets, actors studios and the wonderful facades, had my picture taken at the bar of the Rovers.I think the tours are only running for this year. I am heart broken to find the show has been axed. I loved those old series.

I can't find the Facebook page for supporting Coronation Street returning to Australian free to air tv. I'd like my voice to be heard!

I am also very sad at this :-( Yes there is Foxtel but they are way past the episodes we have been watching here. There is a site called Corriepedia which gives a timeline of the episodes (do a search on 2006) so then you can go onto you tube but it's hard to find any order to them. I would love Seven Two to be able to get more episodes - it was pretty much the only thing I watched on TV!

Jenny said...

You rat bags Seven Two upsetting us all.The episode is 6398 but cannot find it on line.Think I will watch ABC from now on.Regards to all Corrie fans.Jenny

is the petition up and running?

Just found this forum. Corrie.net provides a very detailed summary of each episode,in order, that is what I am using to get by in the absence of seeing it on screen...a very poor decison by channel seven & I agree I don't want to jump forward eight years even if I could afford pay TV..

I too am devastated with the axing of corrie. it was my big treat & I looked forward to it everyday. Made me feel closer to home. I know lots of people are not happy with channel 72. I csnt affor pay TV.Why can't they keep good programs on & stop putting on repeats all the time. where is that petition so I can sign.

Help - bring corrie back. why did they take it off. it was watchable TV that you could watch & enjoy. not happy. bring it back please

The TV stations don't realise that the elderly and housebound rely on television as there contact with the outside world, yes, you can get it on pay t.v , but how many can afford it after paying for medications, and services for them to survive day to day living...not to many....I work in community aged care and corrie street bought a lot of pleasure to some of these oldies....I hope they bring it back, even if it is 8 yrs old, it's new to them

Typical of free to air tv!! Channel7 didn’t have the decency to warn the viewers that Coronation Street was to be axed.

If they would only realise that if they spent a little more money on good programmes like the ABC and sometimes SBS then they would have more viewers instead the public who can’t afford pay tv are subjected to American rubbish, repeat of repeats and long ad breaks.

What’s the point of having all these digital channels filled with trashy and home shopping programmes? Wake up and take a page of the book from the UK broadcasting companies, don’t treat viewers as if we are idiots and with contempt.

Well, Channel7 and 9, who are just as bad, my viewing is limited with you and I will return to the ABC and SBS stations.

News about Corrie each day kept my old dad going when he was in hospital. Our family all really miss everyone in Coronation St. Please bring it back. We don't mind watching old episodes.
