What will the Street deliver in 2014?

On the whole then, a decent batch of festive episodes from Weatherfield this year, save for the usual nonsense of 'snow on the cobbles'. Every year. Now another twelve months of ranting lies ahead here at Coronation Street Blog Towers. However, we live in hope and cling to the possibility that there will be much to enthuse about before we reach for the Christmas decorations again.

There are new characters to welcome and maybe even cherish. Weatherfield's favourite personal trainer - well, only personal trainer, Kal, is getting his feet under the table. Save for his slightly exaggerated speaking style, Kal looks like he's going to fit in well. He's establishing relationships and has caught the eye of Come to Deirdre. She likes a challenge but I fear Kal would jog quickly into the sunset should he be presented with Deirdre's stuffed marrow.

'Feisty' Maddie - she of the filthy hair and filthy attitude - will no doubt mellow but hopefully not too much. If she's here to put some oomph into the increasingly dreadful Sophie, then so be it. Likewise Tony Stewart who at the time of writing has yet to make an appearance. He should add a different dimension to Grimshaw family life and hopefully give Eileen a chance to hone her misery to new levels in the coming year.

The debate over the Corrie women has been an interesting one over the past few weeks but by the 'eck Minnie Caldwell, the ladies do need sorting out. The nasty brigade seemed to  gather in force during the end of 2013. New, horrible Rita is unpleasant to watch and rather than comforting Mother Earth, she's now morphed into a meddlesome ratbag. The collapse of her marriage is on the cards and maybe in its wake we will get a more thoughtful, contemplative Rita.

It's farewell to a couple of Prices in 2014. The readership to this blog seem to have sighed with relief. Foisting an entirely new family into the Rovers turned out to be a huge mistake. It was no fault of the actors, just one storyline after another which required us to be bothered about Stella and co. Sadly we weren't. The addition of Gloria should have been an absolute joy, especially given that Sue Johnston was cast in the role. It must have been a disappointment to her to have been handed such an unpleasant part. Much as the Prices have failed to deliver though, here's hoping they get an exit storyline that isn't 'explosive'. Let them leave with a bit of dignity.

Michelle and Liz. Liz and Michelle. They stagger around like something out of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Michelle has never really been a fan favourite and now she's in full arm-snapping mode, she's even worse. Maybe 2014 will see her finally escape the House of McDonald and emerge into something more positive, Like a taxi to the airport. As for Liz? She's a better option as landlady than Stella but that's not saying much. Her recent duffing up of Peter in the bogs was laughably bad. If Liz is to remain we can only hope that she calms down a bit and acts her age. At the moment she lacks credibility and that's never good for a Rovers boss.

Post-Hayley Roy is surely going to be an interesting character this year. Please, dear storyliners, don't shove the poor bloke into some comedy friendship with Mary. No doubt Mary Moodswing will be waiting to make an entrance stage left but it would be too obvious a move and simply wrong. Where Corrie always triumphs is when unlikely friendships emerge. Roy and Carla would be interesting and given the latter's relationship with Hayley, maybe not too jarring.

Kevin's due back from Germany this Spring and we can all hope that he doesn't launch into some dreadful attempt to woo back Sally. The pairing of Sal and Tim is inspired. She's desperate, he's lazy. They could well be Stan and Hilda: The Next Generation. Let's not spoil this with Kevin screeching from the sidelines. Much better that he surprised everyone by bringing back a new woman or even his long lost brother Carl. Remember him? Don't worry, you're not alone.

What else would it be good to see in 2014? More of the new and rather wonderful Come to Deirdre. Anne Kirkbride must be loving every script delivery to her dressing room. Deirdre is suddenly canny, funny and a wee bit naughty. We are loving it. Also let's have more Eva this year. She and Jason were made for each other and with both characters approaching thirty, it's time for them to settle down. Something else for Eileen to moan about. How about a more independent Gail 2014 too? The whole Tilsey/Platt thing is starting to feel very claustrophobic. It would be fun to see her away from that house and striking out on her own. She doesn't need to be a trainee Ivy Tilsley. One of those was enough.

Let's forget about the likes of Tina and Tracy. One is heading for the cemetery and the other seems set to be bellowing "Well, hello?" every five minutes until the end of the century. What about the rest though? Is there a character you would like to see develop in a different way? Any new friendships that could emerge? Or how about new characters who could enhance the lives of some of the familiar faces? What would you like to see on t'cobbles in 2014?

I 100% agree about Roy and Carla. It would be brilliant to watch an unlikely friendship emerge between them and it would be a wonderful tribute to Hayley.

Friends are so much more fun watch than couples. Roy & Carla, that's brilliant, Clinkers. They really do respect and compliment each other. Nick also needs a buddy. Kal, perhaps? We'd get to know him in the process.

My wish would be for characters to stay in character, and for fewer stories that go further in depth, with richer detail and respect for the past and existing relationships. If Mary drives away, that would be great. If she takes Tracy with her, even better. More Emily and a life change for Gail, please.

Very perceptive blog and I agree about Roy and Carla. Another unlikely pairing could be Deirdre and Eva. Deirdre finally tells Tracy to sling her hook and finds a mother/daughter relationship with Eva, who is now an 'orphan' on Coronation Street.

The problem with Tim was that the viewer was confused. Was he lazy, devious, dim ... ? Now we understand; he's a window cleaner matched with Hyacinth Bucket (no joke intended). Could be comedy heaven.

I'd like Mary to move into Dev's home as a housekeeper. Also, with her very wide knowledge of everything in the universe, she could tell Lloyd about her rock festival days. Could they do a rock night at the Rovers?

Leanne needs a friend. Could be Carla when they share their disgust at Peter. We need to see more interaction between Liz and Deirdre. Although Liz and Michelle teaming up makes a change from their past bickering, it's wearing thin now. If Michelle and Steve are to break up, make it soon; and I would rather Andrea and Lloyd were the new couple.

Sorry to say it, but I'm not looking forward to Kevin and Ken returning and fear the writers will opt for the same old, same old.

What happened to Michelle's dad? Was he an experiment that the writers decided didn't work? They hardly gave him any time to develop.

Roy will need help in the café and one possibility will be the amazingly reformed Maddie (give it a couple of episodes). He's offered refuge to a string of characters like her, and it could work again. Roy does need a male friend and another unlikely friendship could be between him and Norris when they find they share a love of ... whatever.

2014 looks promising.

I would love to see a Roy and Hayley friendship develop, united in grief over Hayley's death. I would love to see more female friendship on the show also, perhaps Leanne and Carla, Kylie and Eva, Julie and Eilleen, Michelle/Maria/Carla would all be good pairings for strengthened friendships.
I hope Hayley's death is handled well, and the aftermath for Roy will be very important.
Interested to see where they take Kal as he could be a great character.
I think a few couples need to be split like Carla and Peter (hope she kicks him to the kerb when the Tina stuff comes out) and Michelle and Steve because she has become very unlikeable and Steve is just a comedy character now. But some need to reunite and stay together like David and Kylie, Nick and Leanne etc.
Also possibility for new couples maybe Julie and Tim if Sally and Kevin reunite, Kal and Carla would be interesting, Dev and Stella!
Would like to see Julie adopt a child in 2014 too. Just some vague ideas, I hope 2014 is a good year for corrie and is not dominated by bloody Tina's death.

Roy and Carla sorry *

I'd like to see a bit more sisterhood between Eva and Leanne. I'm with you on Kevin, would rather see him return with a new woman from Germany which will put Sally's nose right out of joint. She may have Tim but her ego won't be happy if Kevin comes back and couldn't care less who she's with!

I'm pushing for a Kal and Leanne fling and I'm fully expecting a Dev and Stella one, that's been coming for a long time.

I don't much care what they do as long as they quit flogging story lines to death. How much longer do we have to put up with the Kylie/David/Nick thing?

don't forget, Tina's exit will drag on to 2015.

A friendship between Roy & Norris would be good

Call me out of my mind but I think Julie and Dev could be good together and with his two kids Julie's need to be a mother would be fulfilled. The idea of Diedre being a surrogate Mom to Eva is a good one - that has possibilities.

I would love sarah Lou and Beth back and a few more friendship e.g. Leanne & carla, liz & stella. And speaking on the lines of weddings eva & Jason because it sounded nice when she said it on the Christmas Day episode.break ups : nick and leanne.and I am really looking forward to gloria and Dennis affair and the baby shocker storyline

Brilliant! "Michelle and Liz. Liz and Michelle. They stagger around like something out of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"

I'm liking Kal a lot. I'd like to see some interacting with Kal, Dev, Steve, Lloyd, Tyrone. Similar to when Mike, Fred, and some of the other guys belonged to the Weatherfield Square Dealers. The men all seem to be superfluous and totally tied to specific stories with families or individuals -- there seems lots of room to have male group plots.

A Dad's group must be on the cards, with solo Dads Kal, Dev and Kevin (when he returns), along with Ches, Gary and Ty

An original storyline might be nice this year.

Great post! Glad to see there is someone else out there who wonders why Carl Webster is never mentioned. Hope he appears in Weatherfield one day and establishes some sort of relationship with his long-lost family!

Didn't Kevin also have a sister too? I would also like to see Leanne and Eva become closer especially with both Stella and Gloria leaving. I would also like to know more about Eva's dad

Just watched the episode where Tracy decides to thrash Deidre"s house to scare her into letting the dreadful couple stay with her - Tracey you still act like a 15 year old perhaps that's the problem she hasn't grown up mentally everyone caters for her and haven't made her gorw up! Shame on you Tracey why Rob is still hanging around her I can't see the attraction - but beggars can't be choosers. Carla is becoming such a likable character I hope she will see what a weasel she has married and kicks him to the kerb. I also hope she will be a friend for Roy after Hayley dies they are ying and yang but I feel Roy will see that Carla may be a rough diamond but there is an honest friendship there. Maybe Tracey will be offered a job in Canada and leave Amy here and she sails off into the sunset for ever....
