Yay or Nay - should Tina keep the baby?

It's the big Coronation Street question on which everyone, just about everyone, has a strong opinion either way.

I'm with Gary and Izzy and on this one - they should have the baby. But will Tina hand it over, and indeed, should she?

Legally, the surrogate mother has the right to change her mind. Read more on the legal rights of Surrogacy.

What do YOU think - should Tina keep the baby - Yay or Nay?

Gary and Izzy should have the baby, but this is soapland and Tina will win the court case. As MK is leaving the soap, the baby may fall ill and not survive, leading to allegations of neglect by Tina and Tommy. She/they leave Weatherfield to escape public condemnation.

In real life, NO. But because it's the Windass Armstrongs and I find them as increasingly annoying as the Prices, yes.

They went about this totally the wrong way and should have asked for professional guidance with a proper surrogate, not the girl down the road. If anything comes from this story, it should be that. Don't ask your neighbour to have a baby for you. Seek proper advice and a proper surrogate. The dozy controlling Windas Armstrongs brought this on themselves. And..... Izzy and Gary were hardly rock solid before Owen started flashing his cheque book, is there any wonder they are not together anymore. Fine way to go about having a baby.

I think Tina should give the baby up. Genetically it isn't hers and morally she promised it to Izzy and Gary and took money for it. It's tough to give him up but she should.

Gary and Izzy should have the baby.

It’s a no brainer – NAY. Tina was just the incubator and is not genetically related to the child – you need to know of illnesses that run in the family – the mother already has a debilitating disease making her unable to walk. Tina is a single part time barmaid with an on/off boyfriend who is also in a dead end job – totally selfish just thinking about her feelings and not what is best for the child who has an extended family, although its hard to feel sorry for this very strange bunch. As for Rita – keep yer neb out Red

A definite NO she shouldn't keep the baby. Unless there's some utterly bizarre fluke that she was pregnant at the moment of the implant - then that baby is genetically not hers in any way. Also, from an ethical/moral point of view - she made an agreement to be the surrogate and should hand over the baby to Gary & Izzy.

I don't believe Tina should keep the baby but I'm still on her side. She didn't plan any of it and she has genuinely bonded with the baby so I feel very sorry for her.

The Windass/Armstrong family are so awful and after everything that's happened, no wonder Tina doesn't want to hand the baby over to them.

1. Owen is a bully
2. Anna has a short fuse and thinks it's OK to get up in a pensioner's face and practically threaten her (poor Rita)
3. Gary lost the plot and held Izzy hostage not that long ago, then he made a pass at Tina a few weeks back. He would have cheated on Izzy if Tina hadn't rejected him.
4. Izzy decided to ban Gary from seeing 'their' son when he was born because she wanted to get back at him. That's the kind of mother who puts her own feelings before her children.

5. Katy is also mess.

TEAM TINA.

I'm with (what I expect to be) the majority view. The baby is not Tina's either genetically or morally. Indeed I was surprised to discover earlier that the law lags some way behind what I think most people would regard as the moral imperative for a surrogate mother to stick to the agreement and hand the child over, no matter how much "bonding" there has been. Irrespective of the suitability of the Windass/Armstrongs, they are the parents. Countless thousands of children are born into "unsuitable" households every year without much being done to prevent it, but leaving that issue aside the main argument should centre on the welfare of the child, and with the extended and relatively stable family support available to Gary and Izzy (at least compared with Tina and Tommy) they are the better choice. Given a fractious or difficult time with the baby, Tina is more likely to start to think "well this isn't really MY child, why am I bothering?" eventually. Izzy would have no such get-out (in common with most parents!).

Nope. She should hand it over.

The baby is Izzy's and Gary's and she should hand him over. Surely though they would have looked into the legal side of what would happen if Tina refused to hand the baby over and got something in place. I know in Izzy's situation it is one of the first things I would have done.

Somebody told me that the baby turns out to be Tina's and Tommy's. I will be very disappointed in the scriptwriters if this is the case.

On what planet to they let women who have had no children of their own become surrogates? Of course Tina wouldn't know how she'd feel after the birth, she'd never been through it. She didn't even have a sister or close friend who had. This story is getting more awful by the minute.

I don't like the Windass/Armstrongs but Jake is theirs even if the law says otherwise. I've always been a Tina fan and am willing to accept her current behavior on a post-partum mood swing and not having family to turn to. Sorry, love, but you are old enough to live up to your responsibilities.

On the other hand, in one scene, earth mother Anna reverted to the nasty bit of trash we met years ago, the B! who ultimately caused the death of Tina's dad. Nothing explains that. Take Jake and leave.

I hate everything about this story. There was such potential if they simply remained focused on Izzy's challenges and frustrations (stuff like the little car blocking thingee today) and Tina's growing change of heart. Instead we were subjected unfounded medical judgment by Izzy, improbable desperation for Tina, a shady deal, continuous intrusion into Tina's life, bullies, bitches and a bombshell. We were handed another tram crash on what should have been a deeply personal character story. Enough.

Well chucking Tina and baby Jake out of the flat and making them homeless as the Windasses did yesterday just showed what horrible bullying people they are, instigated by Anna, wouldnt bode well for them if this does go to court.

Tina should keep it. She's a strong, capable woman who could manage with or without Tommy. Yes, she was just the incubator but the law is on her side, plus Grizzy are hardly couple of the year when it comes to stability and reasonableness.

I just can't stand the Windass/Armstrong clan, apart from Faye.

Legally Tina can keep the baby as its surrogate mum, also read the part about paying for and accepting money for a child, illegal in this country end of.

Digger, well said! I agree completely with all of your comments. I am watching in Canada and am anxious to see how this ends. Either way I wish the poor little baby had better prospects for parents. I can't see a future for Gary and Izzy. Somehow I can't see Tina staying with Tommy as she has already been with half the blokes on the street David (ugh), Jason and Graham whose next Ryan?

The Windass'aren't exactly helping their case by chucking Tina and bin bags out of Owen's flat but Tina should NOT be keeping the baby. As Digger said, it is morally and genetically Izzy and Gary's, however annoying those two can be. Will the baby need a blood donation down the road and his true parentage discovered..?

Anonymous said...

Flaming Nora, thanks for posting a link to "Legal Issues around Surrogacy"! As annoying as the storyline can get, what can get even more annoying are the opinions people form without looking at the law. If, after that, someone thinks the law needs changing, that's a different issue and a different forum for debate.

Shan said...

As much as I also dislike the Windass Armstrong family, the baby is genetically Izzy's and Gary's and it's not like Izzy didn't want to carry the baby because it would ruin her body or something frivolous like that. I get that the law is on Tina's side but I don't think it's right. How can you get the hopes of the intended parents up then have them living knowing their biological baby is out there and they can't raise the baby not because they're bad parents but because someone else decided they wanted to keep the child for themselves.

Part of what's bugging me about this as well is Tina's reasoning that the Windass Armstrong isn't a great family. Who is Tina to judge? She's not in a stable relationship herself, the man she just got back together with is the reason why she needed the money in the first place, her dad wasn't exactly the model of stability, who knows where her mom is (I can't remember the reasons why she came to live with the Platt's), among many other things. I just don't think she is the best judge.

My theory as to where this story line should go? They go to court, Izzy and Gary get their baby back, Tina tries to kidnap the baby and that's how she leaves the show with fireworks.

Janice. said...

Neither. Put the baby up for adoption to a family vetted for stability, financial security and the absence of a criminal record.

Yes Tina should keep the baby. She gave birth to him and has shown she cares more for his welfare than any of the windass family. Owen is just a bully and they all seem to care more about getting their own way than the baby. Chucking her out of that flat like that and kicking off just proves what their family is really like.

Zagg said...

OMG just finish this story please! No Tina should not keep the baby. Her turn around was too sudden to even be believable. She is in no position to even keep him. A future with the dullard Tommy? He's the one who got her into this mess to begin with and then bailed on her. I am pissed off that they are even back together.
While the Windass/Armstrong clan is no picnic, they are the rightful parents. What is she going to tell the kid when he gets older? I stole you from your biological parents because I am a selfish cow? Sorry you have no real bloodline history or biological relatives because I am a selfish cow?
This whole storyline is out of hand and getting more stupid everyday. The whole Gary making a pass was SO blown out of proportion it was a joke. They act like he caught her in the back alley and sodomized her for God's sake. There wasn't even any body contact...at all. A split second and ugh...lives are ruined. Bad bad writing.
Just get it over with..I don't care anymore. I hate this story. Everybody involved is just getting creepier by the day.

I want Izzy and Gary to keep the baby,as they are the biological parents. Also, I think it would be a new and good thing to see a mother in a wheelchair coping with a child.

I love the comment by one of the above posters, decribing Corrie as "Bullies, bitches and a bombshell"! That (sadly) sums up the show these days!

Tina should keep the baby. The Windass's are a bunch of weirdos who can barely look after themselves. In my opinion even worse than the awful Prices. When you see Tina with Jake/Joe you will see that she is a better mother to him than Izzy could ever be. She has Tommy, Rita, Dennis and other friends who could help her, not that she'd need them as she is a strong and capable woman by herself.

As this is soap land....I want Tina to keep the baby. She has been the only one to put the baby first. Izzy is a shrew. Gary is undependable.
As for Anna and how she started poor Joe's demise....it has come full circle! lol
BTW. Izzy could have tried to get pregnant again. Lots of women have miscarriages but they still go on to try for a baby. Izzy would not put herself through another pregnancy - just in case she miscarried again.
I think the storyline is interesting. I like that she has Rita in her corner.
Anna acting like the caring grandmother! Hah! She let Faye go with her dad and supplies food and does laundry. Yet she made sure that her infant grandbaby - who is recovering from surgery does not have a home to go to when he is let out of hospital. Hypocrit!

Tina should give up the Windass baby. not her eggs or sperm and its hard but not hers and this is something she now realizes she should have not gone into. It's not a gift you can say sorry I'm taking it back, it's a childs life, with parents.

Anonymous said...

Tina is right to keep the baby. Genetics don't make loving parents and Izzy was already trying to use the baby as a weapon with Gary before he was born by saying he wouldn't be allowed to see him. And given Owen and Annas recent behaviour that baby will be better off with a mum who loves him. I personally would rather have loving parents that I'm not related to than having a family that cares more about kicking off and getting their own way.

Some comments on here are crazy!"Tina should keep IT end of!

Its a good job some of you lot aint in charge of things like this in the real world!!

Tina is a surrogate...that child is not hers biologically hand the baby over I have never seen a pregnant women behave the way she has screaming all the time she played it really bad/ was wrote bad and ivf was portrayed really bad too, I think the whole story is pretty awful really

Tina all the way. Everyone seems to have forgotten that the windass family started off by conning Tina's dad out of thousands and then stealing his tools so he couldn't work, setting off his spiral into debt and inadvertently causing his death. Anna is just plain vicious and shouldn't be allowed near any child. Owen is a bully and he broke the tenency by chucking Tina out and in reality a landlord cannot enter the property without prior warning or they can get done for breaking and entering. I do truly feel sorry for Izzy and Tina both are victims in this , Tina didn't plan for this, she just bonded with the baby she carried for months. I hope when Tina leaves it is with baby Joe.

Anonymous said...

Everyone keeps saying that Tina is not the baby's mum cause she isn't biologically related to him, that's total bs. That's like saying that a step dad or step mum that cares for a child every day is less of a parent than a bio dad or mum who bothers to see their child once a month or year. Legally and emotionally Tina is the babys mother and he belongs with her.

IAM A TINA FAN IAM ATEAM TINA IAM DEFINATLY ON TINAS SIDE I ABSOLUTLEY HATE THE WINDASS/ ARMSTRONG FAMILY THEY SHOULD LEAVE POOR TINA ALONE OWEN IS SUCH A NASTY BULLY AND I WILL NOT PUT UP WITH ANNAS SELFISHNESS AND NOT ONLY THAT ANNA SLAPS TINA HARD IN THE FACE TINA HAS EVERY RIGHT TO KEEP BABY JOE ANNA CAN NOT GO ROUND HITTING PEOPLE AND GETTING AWAY WITH IT TINA WILL HAVE THE THE RIGHT TO CALL THE POLICE IF ANNA HIS OUT THIS WILL GO TO COURT AND HAVE ANNA CHARGE WITH ASSAULT & GO TO PRISON

Anonymous said...

I can't stand Anna or Owen, Garys a creep and Izzy constantly goes whining to daddy to fix everything for her. The whole lot of them are thugs and bullies. That poor baby would be way better off with Tina a mum who loves him. Tina should keep baby Joe and wipe the floor with them in court and report Owen for breaking and entering and breaking the tenency agreement, and ring the police and have Anna done for assault.

Am I just old fashioned believing that as a couple, Izzy and Gary should not have contemplated becoming parents in the first place? If they are not even committed enough to one another to marry, how can the commitment required of parents be possible for either of them?

This whole story line has been so badly handled, although the subject has so many possibilities that even done badly has generated lots of conversation. How much more good it could have accomplished with regard to the surrogacy issue if it had been offered in a more realistic manner, I wonder?

IMHO it has been played out through the wrong characters. Even though Izzy's physical challenges could have made for interesting dynamics, Brian and Julie are in a stable, committed relationship and might have made a more believable couple, with a professional surrogate, so that the issues (emotional and legal) could have been explored realistically with opportunities for the viewers to learn about this interesting choice of parenthood, rather than in the ridiculous, cliche, soap manner it has been presented.
Personally, I think the child should be taken away from both of them and placed for adoption so he can have mature, loving parents and a hope of a positive future which he does not have with either Tina and Tommy or Izzy and Gary.

I think Tina should keep the baby. There is always drama in Izzys family weather its cheating, lies or anger issues it just wouldn't be good for the baby. Also, even when Tina was discharged from hospital she was with Joe first thing in the morning while Gary and Izzy were in the Cafe leaving her with all the responsibilities! Although It is horrible for Izzy I think in this case Tina keeping baby Joe is the right thing to do. And if Izzy really loves her child she will know what to do for the best!
