Corrie's Bill Tarmey passes away, aged 71

It is with great sadness that the Coronation Street Blog has to announce the death of one of Corrie's most well loved actors - Bill Tarmey. Between 1979 and 2010 he played the loveable rogue Jack Duckworth and enjoyed a wonderful partnership with Liz Dawn, who played his wife Vera. He'd also been an extra on the show since the early 1970s.

Bill managed to create a wonderful and cherished character, loved by millions across the UK, Ireland and abroad.

A testament of this was the fact that Jack came out on top in our poll to find the greatest Corrie character.

Sad news indeed.

My fav Jack moments was his great scenes with Vera, Bet, Alec Gilroy and Betty.

Jack pinching Betty's bottom was Corrie class!

And Vera knocking him on the head with a painting!

RIP Bill and thank you for creating a Corrie legend!

Shocked to hear this, although his bad health was well known. One of the greats.

Feel incredibly moved by the news of Bills passing. Love and respect to those he leaves behind. He touched many hearts in front and behind the camera. Legends never die, will be remembered in the hearts of those he leaves behind. Rest now precious angel. Xxx

Very sad to hear the news. Far too young to leave us. Wonderful character, wonderful actor.

Such very sad news. I know many of us felt like we knew him. My thoughts go out to his family and may they be comforted by how much people around the world care for him.

Very, very sad news.

I'm not one of those strange people who are unable to separate fact from fiction, but when I hear the news earlier today, I thought immediately of the deeply moving scene of Jack's passing two years ago. I almost feel like I've been through losing him once before. Sadly this time there's no comfrort in knowing he's enjoying his retirement. All the more reason to be thankful for the wonderful body of work he left us to cherish; funny, touching and classic Weatherfield. RIP chuck.

Oh, what sad news! Jack Duckworth was a classic character and Bill Tarmey seemed like a lovely man. I hope he was proud of his work - he will be remembered by many with affection.-NN

It makes me think of his last swansong in the Rovers, when the affection of the cast just cascaded through my TV screen.

Very, very sad news. We knew he wasn't in great health but 71 is far too young. Jack was a terrific character and Bill was a great actor, always spot on with his performances and very believable.

Time to get the DVDs out and remember him in his prime.

R.I.P x
