Corrie's been "blasted" today in The Sun for not including the Olympics in its upcoming storylines. I say "Good on them!". Coronation Street's about the north, not that London. I can't see many of the characters being able to afford and/or wanting to travel down to London to watch sports when they can sit in the Rovers Return with a hot pot and a half of stout and then go home and watch th'Olympics on telly if they want to.
The Sun quotes a Corrie source saying: "Any references to the Olympics will be in passing and
relevant to how it affects our residents, so not overt or heavy at all.
It's different for 'EastEnders' as it's on their doorstep."
Quite right too.

why should it?
they did cover the Commenwealth Games when Manchester hosted it with Norris being a volunteer.
It would be different if there was an athletic character in the show currently, but even Jason's running has been long-forgotten now. There are quite a number of events happening this year that it would be unfair to assume that they can all be written into the show. The Diamond Jubilee was covered which was great, but when it comes to something a lot more current I can understand how difficult it could be. Has there been any reference to Euro 2012 in the show over the last few weeks? It's possible that with no one knowing how England are going to perform until the match that it doesn't make sense to perhaps have a match on in the Rovers or for one of the lads to skive off work (David Platt!) to watch from home.
At the end of the day, the show is scripted and despite its realism there are elements of the nation's every day life that could prove to be problematic or even a little unrealistic to incorporate.
When the Commonwealth Games were in Manchester, I don't think Eastenders referred to it, so why should Corrie do the same with the Olympics. Eastenders cover the Olympics, it'd be boring if Corrie did the same. Truth be told, the Jubilee wasn't referred much in Corrie. Yes, a street party but the Queen was not mentioned!
EE is pumping the Olymics like crazy with one of their characters carrying a torch..it's mentioned in every episode..as well as another character wanting to call her B&B Kim's Olympic Palace or some such but an official from the Olympics showed up in person (like that would happen) and made them take down the name. Makes me wonder who's in charge of production over at EE and of course, at Corrie. Big Money.
I'm just glad that there will be one little oasis of TV that isn't all about the bloody Olympics.
Just remember if the Olympics was anywhere else other than London, it would be the British Olympics. But London gets the right to hog it. And this is coming from an ex Londoner!
I think a few passing references could be made for realism but I'd welcome some non olympic tv.
It is all about London. I live in the Midlands and don't see much of the Legacy up here. If Manchester was hosting some related events then it would be reasonable to mention them.
For realism, I would think some of the guys on the Street would mention the Euro Cup 2012 in passing.

From what i understand, Manchester will host some of the Olympic football. But i may be wrong.
I'm with Mr. McE up there; the olympics is nothing but a hyped-up money grab and the less I hear about it, the happier I'll be! And, it's the LONDON 2012 olympics, so why would folk in Machester bring it up except in passing? More likely to talk about the footy.
Here in GA we hosted the 1996 games, The olympic committees are very particular about logo and name attached to anything not approved, we had a lot of people having to rename things due to the 96 games here, couldnt use the name proper without paying, for them to reference it it may be a fee associated hence no mention. In the states Radio can not mention the SuperBowl by that name per rules from the NFL they are given approved phrases they can use like big game, super sunday but not the official game.
