Coronation Street fan of the week – Nathan from Southport

It's Wednesday and time to meet another Corrie fan of the week.
Would you like to be our Coronation Street fan of the week? Click here to find out more.

Who are you and where are you from?I am Nathan Richardson and I am from Southport, Lancashire. I currently, however, exist in Nottingham.

How long have you been watching Corrie?
The first episode that I recall watching was the one in which Jim McDonald fell off a building site, so since 1998.

Who are your favourite female and male characters - and the reasons why?
My favourite male character is Ken Barlow. As an individual, I find him inspiring. The failed novelist, unlucky in love, he retains, I feel, a quiet sense of will, and by now having accepted his lot, he seems to simply wish to get through life unharmed. As his family crashes around him, he resorts into an imagined world of fiction, and Heavens, Lord knows one would take solace in a book if it was Deirdre that you woke to each morning.

I suppose, also, I find the fact that he has lived on the same Manchester back-street for his entire life quite nice. As for the females, at the moment I’m a great fan of Sylvia. A woman of acidic wit and with a grand collection of cardigans, she is cantankerous, outspoken, utterly pompous and an outright snob. My sister said that the character reminds her of me, and to this I have not received such delightful compliment.

What's been some of your favourite Corrie storylines over the years?
I enjoyed Ian McKellen playing the deceptive escritor, and Ken’s brief encounter with Martha was particularly enjoyable to watch. Having a lover on a canal boat with whom you idle away your afternoons; drinking tea, eating potato and leek soup, and talking about Charles Dickens – well, that’s the stuff that daydreams are made on.

And what would your fantasy Corrie storyline be?
I would like Peter Noone to return as Stanley Fairclough and bid for Rita’s affections with Dennis Tanner, at some point standing under a street lamp serenading her with "Leaning on a Lampost", a little ukulele in his hand.

But in more realistic terms, however, I would have Norris seduce Gail; Ken become the editor of the Parish magazine and evince his atheist thinking; Sally would go out for the day – somewhere like New Mills, I fancy – and never be seen again; Peter would start smoking Marlboro lights, drinking black coffee and boring Carla with ruminations on beat-nick poetry; Roy would make the cafe strictly vegetarian; Kevin would move to Whitby; the Rovers Return Inn would stop serving lager; Emily would begin writing poison-pen letters; Brian would leap, a la Anna Karenina, in front of a train, leaving Julie alone to take a job in a library, begin drinking heavily and compose bleak poetry about her loss; and Owen would be gored to death by a bull under an arch of a railway. And I would write the scripts.

Have you any snippets or news about meeting any of the Corrie cast, or trips to the set, etc., that you'd like to share?
I saw Vicky Binns (Molly Dobbs) in a cinema once, but I didn’t say anything. I never cared for her character.

Nathan - you should be writing some of the scripts, especially the one where Emily writes poison-pen letters LOL!!

I agree, you should give the blog a whirl. Sounds like it might bring a little life to your existence? Being from Canada, I've always secretly dreamed of living in England. Tell me it's not a futile goal?
