Despite Coronation Street producer Phil Collinson saying
that Corrie has too much crime, he's continuing with the ruination of Carla Connor this summer with a rape scene. The Sun has more details today about psycho Frank Foster's sexual attack of Carla Connor and the paper says he rapes her after she calls off their wedding. Peter then comes to her aid and attacks Frank. Dopey Maria offers support for Carla after she reports the rape to police.
The scenes will be screened in September and will see Frank get angry with Carla when she announces her love for Peter. The scene will then cut straight to the aftermath of the attack. Carla will be seen as she cowers in a foetal position, with a torn skirt and bruised wrists. Stupid nutter Frank will then try to convince her that the rape was
HER fault. Oh for God's sake, lock him up and throw away the script.
A source said: "These scenes will be uncomfortable to watch to say the least - but you don't see the actual rape because that might be too disturbing for younger viewers."
Bosses and actress Alison, 38, have also been working closely with rape support groups to make sure the storyline is as realistic as possible.
Oh, so that makes yet another rape story perfectly alright to show as entertainment in Corrie then? NOT!

As disturbing and horrible as this may be, I am actually looking forward to seeing how it plays out. It's been on the cards for a long time anyway and I love Carla!
Although it does seem that there's been a lot of crime lately, Corrie has always gone for dramatic storylines, and this is just another one.
I enjoy watching Carla too but seeing how well they cope with recovery after being raped and attacked women on Corrie isn't the only way to show how strong they can be... argh, this makes me so angry.
I've no problem with a rape storyline per se; just fed up with the endless sensation and drama. These storylines fail to shock any more.
Bring back the kitchen sink.

i hope carla kicks his arse but ive a feeling this will make her into a completely different person which is a shame
I hope people don't complain in an attempt to stop the storyline because even though it will make for uncomfortable viewing, it's been slowly building up since Frank appeared. Despite all the drama, I think it will be a shame is the story isn't followed through properly.
I'm not looking forward to the story, but Allison King is such a good actress, it will be interesting to see how she handles it. I hope it does change Carla, a little. If it doesn't, then it's just another convenient and soon forgotten plot device, like Hayley's son, David's epilepsy, and Chris' wife beating.
If it's done right, a rape storyline can be powerful and very dramatic. The effect on someone like Carla would also be interesting to see.
I just hope they don't trivialise it, as EastEnders and Hollyoaks have been guilty of doing.
They did a really good job of a rape storyline back when it happened to Toyah. They really showed the aftermath quite well with her character. It took Toyah a long time to get her confidence back. I hope Carla doesn't take it quietly. I hope she goes after him with all guns blazing.
So now everybody will tune in to watch Carla not get raped.Will she lie unconscious too?

Nora: because the show is primarily about women, and the audience is predominately (not entirely, just mostly!) female. The good stories almost always ultimately focus on the women and their relationships.
Norris sodomized, horrible, but meh, he's already a lowly worm. On the other hand, Kevin or Owen would be interesting because they have daughters, all of whom have to deal with men; how would they handle their girls dates, friends and bosses? What about relationships with Sally/Anna? Their own self-esteem?
I agree with you, violence is better suited to police dramas. I am tired of seeing so much of it on Corrie. If they're going to use it, it better be for real character development, not just a plot point.
Flaming Nora, I so agree. I am not looking forward to this story at all. I don't think that this is family viewing or 'entertainment' and it's becoming a show that I feel I can't sit and watch with my children like I could watch with my mother. Soaps do and will cover sometimes ridiculous and sensational story lines (i.e John Stape and his antics) but there is indeed a line and this in my opinion crosses that line. Although they say that they aren't showing anything but Carla curled in the corner bruised and battered, that is more than enough thanks. I don't want to have to explain to my children and I don't find it enjoyable 'entertaining' television myself! And Certainly not before the watershed. Phil Collins doesn't have kids does he? I don't think it's appropriate to show this story so early in the evening, (as so many stories on the show these days - Becky's antics have been diabolical). Otherwise they should start rethinking the time the show goes out!
The story sounds very gritty and dark, but hopefully it will be handled in a manner that is realistic rather than sensationalist. I'm sure that Alison King will carry off her role superbly considering that she has previously excelled in dark plotlines.
I don't see why people get all upset about rape but call murder 'John Stape's antics'. Without making light of rape, isn't that much worse?
Btw, the episode's will be post-watershed.
On a totally different note (and totally glossing over my feelings about another sexual assault on a soap.... which I am *not* impressed with)... why do they have these continued story lines with Carla only being in love with men that are married/engaged to someone else? Come on! Now we're supposed to believe that Peter's the love of her life?

Dear "Anonymous" - I referred to the John Stape saga as 'antics' as it was just so incredible and ridiculous in my opinion. From the whole wheeling Colin Fishwich in a wheelie bin wrapped in a carpet, leading a double life with Charlotte, murdering her, then just after rushing to the hospital to be with his wife who had just given birth to their baby. Then.... sitting for Christmas dinner to keep up the pretence to your dead 'fiancees' parents and listening to a CD of Charlotte singing (or warbling) to the Wind Beneath My Wings whilst eating. Attending her funeral like the grieving fiance. Pretending all sorts to the mother of the person's identity that you've stolen, that then after weeks you finally murder her and just after doing so scoop bowls of the soup (the lunch you've made for the two of you before you bump her off) into the pockets of your coat rather than wash the bowls and put them away! I could go on, but I'm sure you get my drift.... But I must finish with the creme de la creme of when eventually they did confront John after all this time - when he tried to commit suicide and jump of the roof of the hospital......... he just vanished into thin air - yes just like real life! (and lets face it, all this hardly done in a gritty way, it was done in a bumbling, farcical black comedy way that even if we weren't meant to laugh we did - or I did). So that's my explanation as to why I referred to John Stape's murder's as antics. I can't imagine that they will tackle the Carla story in the same farcical way and am imagining it will be grittier and darker and far more real. No matter how you want to look at it, the producers did play on the John Stape murders for laughs - It was hardly Prime Suspect now was it?!
Yay for Beth again!!!!! And Nora. If PC really wants to tackle ishoos, then male rape would at least be more original, having only been tackled once before in British soap to my knowledge and that was in Hollyoaks.
Murder and rape are both serious crimes, but some people have some funny views about rape. I have never heard anyone say a murder victim was "asking for it", because they were walking around in a poor area not wearing a stab vest. Murderers are mostly brought to justices, rapists mostly not. There is too much crime in Corrie and I don't see why serving up scenes that are "difficult to watch" is a commendable thing.
I find Carla to be a very unlikeable character, so I'm not thrilled about any upcoming storyline for her. Everything has already been said, but I do agree with Nora and Beth, and wish they wouldn't have sexual violence on Corrie.
More to the point, this spoiler suggests that Peter and Carla will be together? I hope not, I love the junior Barlow family. At least let them be happy.
It depends how this is played out. When Maria was almost raped, she got little sympathy from Carla at the end because 'she was dressed to impress' etc. We know from newspaper reports that women are often judgemental about victims - which is why many don't report the crime. Carla is depicted as a 'strong' woman so the message could be 'rape can happen to anyone'.
As for pairing up with Peter, I hope this doesn't happen on a permanent basis. Maybe he'll stray and come back when a baby is born...? I don't see any maternal instinct in Carla so how would she cope with Simon?
As for being after the watershed with no doubt details of a helpline to call, maybe it will help some people report crimes against themselves but, in truth, it's just lurid entertainment.

like ive said elsewhere i think leanne is a complete hypocrit seeing as she cheated on her fiance and has the gal to ask peter to not even look at carla when he hasnt done anything with her
i just hope that this will be shocking and will be shown after the watershed this hopefully will kick some gritty real life back into this soap ! believe me i love coronation street but we need a little hard drama not sean getting a strop on because he cant be in a photo shoot with his son im so gripped !!!
it will be shown after the watershed, I am quite looking forward to this and Alison is an incredible actress so I don't think we will be let down. As for those of you saying corrie doesn't have enough humour and that its too dramatic, phil has said that he agrees, but he can't jus make it all happy again overnight, it takes time but he said it will go back to how it was so there will be more humour.
I knew this was going to happen sometime to Carla (quite obvious), after he had been with Maria, and Carla did not believe her that much.
I agree with most people on here, and I also agree with Beth (22 July 2011 14:28) when she says Becky's antics have been diabolical. I also think it is diabolical that smoking is shown on these soaps. I once watched Corrie sometime back where Becky was smoking, then when the adverts appeared, it was about trying to give it up. If they didn't show smoking in the first place, then people wouldn't be influenced However, bring back Mary Whitehouse and she'll sort everything out!
So making light of murder is fine to show to children but showing real crime with it's devastating consequences is not? Funny. And as has been said, the episodes will be shown post-watershed.
Ok Anonymous, my last comment on this for fear of repeating myself. I felt that I needed to censor my children's viewing from John Stape's antics (and I will stick to the word) as much as I need to censor my children watching Tom and Jerry battering themselves sensless, electrocuting each other, and going at each other hammer and tongs in the name of children's entertainment!!!! Or would you call that physical abuse and mental anguish from Tom to poor Jerry?
With regards to the rape, if this episode or, if any rape episodes are shown AFTER the watershed, how can it be allowed to be repeated well BEFORE the watershed next day or some other time during the week?
I've a feeling that this rape idea could possibly give many people ideas. If it gives just one person the idea to do this to someone, then that is one person too many. Obviously after the programme is finished, they will most likely announce 'If you have been effected in any way Blah Blah Blah...' however, to me, why give people ideas just to make a fictional story jst to get viewers to watch and put the ratings up, or could the awards have something to do with it?
Phil Collinson.. Give us a break and take a loooong holiday. I'm fed up of all this violence in my Corrie. Why not appy for a full time job on this Morning, you're on it often enough. Yawn to the rape Yaaawwn to Corie these days. Cant wait for it to get back on top. x

I HATE CORRIE NOW !!! Please hear me bosses and fix it. No more rapes, murders,car crashes, drug dealers phoney accents or trams...Oh god what on earth has happened to Corrie. It's just soooo bad these days. I wanted a cosy Autumn viewing - Not a violent rapist and alcoholic nut case to entertain me. Oh Phil C. just go away please. :o(
