Corrie loses out at National Television Awards 2011

Coronation Street lost out to EastEnders, again, at last night's National Television Awards. Paula Lane (Kylie) was up for Best Newcomer. That went to EastEnders. Katherine Kelly (Becky) was up for Best Dramatic Performance. That went to EastEnders too. And Corrie as up for Best Serial Drama. Yup, EastEnders.

Corrie's Jack P Shepherd, who plays David Platt, shook his head in disbelief at the end of the awards show. Says it all, really.

Frosty the Snowman said...: I can honestly never understand the popularity of EE, I could never get into it and found it totally miserable. However, sometimes Corrie lets itself down with things like the dragging on and on of the Stape business and the bringing back of a really unpopular chareacter like Tracyluv. Shame as some of the writing is spectacular, other is awful and they should get rid of the awful writers.; 27 January 2011 07:28

Blackie Bird said...: While I am not condoning the win whatsoever, the character of Kylie was dislikeable and annoying and kept turning up like a bad penny so I doubt whether people would vote for her. Becky over dramatises everything to the point of hamming it up, so in fairness did they really deserve to win???; 27 January 2011 07:54
JohnMcE said...: The main reason EastEnders wins more awards is that it's core audience is far more likely to go online that that of Coronation Street, which has a generally older demographic. I was hoping that being able to vote via Radio Times and the other magazines mentioned in the show last night might have made it a more even laying field, but obviously not. If Corrie couldn't win in it's anniversary year, I doubt it ever will.; 27 January 2011 08:54

Anonymous said...: Agree with Frosty and John McE. It isn't just that it's miserable - it's badly made, OTT melodrama and has been from episode 1. And no, that's not sour grapes from a Corrie fan - I used to love Brookside when it started and was a Dallas addict in the early 1980s but EE was always a typical Julia Smith production - a serial written by numbers and making the mistake of having characters yelling at each other and claiming it was effective drama.; 27 January 2011 09:02
Tvor said...: I think the demographic thing is part of the reason. These are people logging in and can vote as many times as they want and they do. Mass voting campaigns for one soap are unfair. The website should limit the votes to one IP address with unexpiring cookies to track them. The Baftas are more fair and voted by the peers.; 27 January 2011 10:29

Dilly Daydream said...: I voted online (because it's free) and was only allowed one vote per e-mail address (so I used my work address, home one...and hubbie's one, so got three votes).

I think multi voting happens with the text or phone votes, they cost money so you can vote as many times as you like.

I consider Coronation Street to be the best soap, so I really don't care what others think and won't waste money lining the fat cats' pockets.

The kids obviously vote for EE - God knows why.

But I have to say I loved Jack P Shepherd's reaction to EE getting best soap again, couldn't agree with him more.; 27 January 2011 14:58

Anonymous said...: Althought the 'tram crash' episodes, including the live one, were absolutely brilliant, much of the rest of Corrie this past year has been uniformly dire, with only the occasional flash of its old brilliance. maggie muggins said...: Corrie at its worst moments is miles better than EE. The latter is sooo depressing, with horrible acting, directing and even sets. If it's true that a younger demographic voted last night's winner, what's up with younger viewers? Do they enjoy that depressive feeling? Really? I honestly don't get it.; 28 January 2011 07:33

Beth said...: John McE - for sure, the EE audience are younger I would say. My whole family watch Corrie and love it, though I can't see any of them logging on to vote (even logging on :))

As for Kylie missing out on the award. I don't watch EE so can't comment on the actress who did win, but Kylie is such an annoying character and lets face it, just on the street for five minutes - I didn't vote for her (left that one blank) and am actually dreading her return to marry David Platt. She's just another "Tracey", mean, spiteful and annoying. Can't they bring in 'normal' characters anymore?
Have to agree with the previous posts that Corrie during the celebrations was wonderful, but it was a very average year before that.; 30 January 2011 11:59
