Helen Worth interview

Tonight is the night that Joe reveals his plan to Gail and sails off into the night to execute that plan. Pun intended. We will find out that Joe, planning to fake his death, drowns accidentally though his widow, Gail, gets banged up for it, because Joe forged her signature on a life insurance plan. Digital Spy has an interview with Helen Worth that's quite good.

Helen says that Gail doesn't willingly go along with Joe's plan but does so reluctantly because she believes in standing by her man. In the end, though, she tries to stop him when they row on the dock. So Joe disappears and Gail thinks he's gone ahead with his plan, which includes leaving her behind to lie to insurance companies and the police. (Nice guy. I don't think.) Gail even lies to her son, Nick, who's suspicious and we know it all goes pear shaped and Gail will go to prison for awhile.

Helen Worth is delighted that her character is still getting major storylines after all these years and says, with regards to the upcoming Corrie 50th anniversary, "The whole aftermath of my storyline is a big part of the anniversary."

Contrary to most, I rather liked the Joe character. He's rather bad with money but so are a lot of people. There's a recession on with people struggling with unemployment, money -- I guess most are too busy struggling and surviving to be watching Coronation Street. I'm really surprised at the postings on this blog and others at the lack of sympathy for a bloke like Joe. There's slack cut for those who are adulterers, arsonists, bigamists, murderers, scammers, psychopaths, bums like Eddie Windass who scam the government/cheat the system at every opportunity, but it seems everyone breathes a sigh of relief that a guy like Joe gets killed off in a boating accident. Yes, he lies about his problems because he's full of pride, shame, guilt. Who doesn't try to cover their problems one way or another?

Joe is a flawed character. His storyline ---of someone struggling and just not able to overcome his circumstances due to a combination of pride, denial, and perhaps the lack of the odd lucky break -- is the actual tragedy rather than his demise from a boating accident.

You're right, Joe is a tragic character but it's so tiresome seeing Gail getting stuck with tragic characters over and over. He was weak and desperate and because of it, Gail is going to have to lie for him and then go to jail.

I reckon Gail blew her best chance of happiness with Phil the Foot-fiddler.

Was Phil the really tall Scottish bloke? How did he leave? Didn't David once deliberately slam a car door on his hand? That's pretty much the only thing I remember about him.

I hope Gail finds happiness. Joe could have worked out for her, he really was a good guy. He was just stupid and stubborn, and now he's trouble. Maybe Gail really is a curse? Or maybe Joe's just a fool.
